Religion comes from the belief in God - not the other way round. A person need not have religion to believe in God.

Their is something in our make up that knows the existence of a god even though we repress it. The small voice the feeling you should not do something. the inner conflict when you do something wrong. Its universal in all societies that to kill another is morally wrong but some times necessary. All cultures have a form of higher power. All major religion talk about a flood(Noah's Ark) I personally believe in Jesus Christ as my lord and Savior I believe he has your answer look in the bible.

There are a couple of ways this question could be answered.
I would say that when man invented god he soon after invented religion as a codified method of worshiping that god.

Yes you don't need someone to tell you that you have a link with the divine. In fact that is the whole point of atheists they don't feel it so you can shout at them as much as you want about your rules but without any link in their hearts they aren't going to listen - why should they.
Same with theists any atheist can yell as much as they want but with that inner knowing you have from communing with your particular deity/power/universal light etc etc they aren't going to listen either and why should they.

Adam and Eve knew that there is a G-d, and had no explicit religion. The same can be said about Noah.
The first man who spread the idea of One G-d was Abraham.

Even with religion you still don't know if god is real. You just choose to have faith that she is real.
