No it's not a dangerous area. Columbia University is in Morningside Heights which is sandwiched between Harlem and the Upper West Side. Just becareful in that area at nighttime also Barnard College is in the area as well.

The area where the University is located is very safe, as safe as any other part of NYC. However, it is on the boundary of Morningside park, which is not safe at all. As long as you stay on the side where the University is and don't go wandering off into the Park you are fine. The area has been fine for a long time, but they have really gone to town to fix it up, it looks great now.

Compared to some other neighborhoods in Brooklyn and the Bronx, Morningside Heights, where Columbia U. is located, is relatively safe. There are a lot of co-op apartment buildings and just west Riverside Drive and West End Avenue are both safe, residential neighborhoods. You hear stories about crime in that neighborhood, but fortunately it's a rare occurrence.

The area right around the school is OK, But avoid going Uptown past 123rd Street and Morningside park after dark.
