Is it just me, or are we supposed to be drained of all the money we have in our pockets, or else we are to be considers
cheap. You go to Starbuck, buy a cup of coffee that cost an arm and a leg, and then you are supposed to put up more in that little mason jar!
When will it end?

I believe they should be paid well enough so as they don't have to count on those little money that they may or may not get from the customers.

If you go to a country clubs. They are not permited to take tips, because they are paid very well, and how about the cooks! they don't get the tips, and they work just as hard!

I hate the tip jar phenomenon; I see it in every possible setting. If you have a job working as counter help at a coffee shop, you don't get tips. If you are a waitress/waiter or a bartender, you do.
I think it's money grubbing and tacky, crass as it can be. Don't let anyone give you the idea you are somehow being cheap for not tipping people who don't deserve tips; if they want to be waiters or waitresses, then fine. They get, what, two or three dollars an hour because they are *expected* to get tips--the guy making the mochacchino (sp?) is not getting the same wage, that guy is getting more.

Summary: No, you don't get a tip simply because there is a "tip jar" there for fetching a cup of coffee or a bagel!
Money grubbers!

I do not believe in tip jars. I work in a cafeteria by myself and do not get paid a lot..... some of my customers tip, some do not. several people have suggested that I put out a tip jar but I refuse because I think that is like begging for tips. While I am always grateful to receive tips, I do not think it is required. Leaving a tip (anywhere) should be a personal decision not a requirement.

My seventeen year old daughter works at a Coffee Pub and they have a tip jar there. If you only knew how little they are paid then maybe you wouldn't carp so much. If you can't afford Starbucks then maybe you should buy a jar of instant coffee and make your own. As they say, walk a mile in my shoes!

Well yeh...its not like we dont work for our money! They didnt do anything special or anything for people to give them tips? Its called a job and if you dont like the pay then find one that pays more. Like when you go to this ice cream place near my house they expect you to give them tips even though an ice cream is like freaken $5. And its not like they use the money for something important either most of the time like help charities or something. If you're going to give away money that you worked hard for, you should at least make sure it goes to an important cause....why not replace the tip jars with a fund raiser jar for cnacer or AIDS.....etc. Just my opinion.

You've pretty much covered it. While the corportations and owners make enough, the employees are rarely paid more than or much more than minimum wage. Some have to support entire households on that. THey rely on tips. Some also do tip sharing. So it's not so much them asking for individual tips as them letting you know they split tips, so all tips would go in the jar and be divided by everyone who worked so hard to get you your meal, not just the cute waitress.
I agree that these people should be paid more and tips shouldn't be obligatory, but we live in a hierarchal capitalistic world and at the current time tipping is the difference between them paying their electric bill and car insurance or not.

Let me get this straight - you go to Starbucks and pay and "arm and a leg" for coffee and then complain about the mason jar? Goofy, don't go to Starbucks. (or, if you do, tell them you're there to pick up the mason jar.)

Don't tip a jar. Tip a person who has given good service.

I have found many, many Starbuck's to be dirty, and the employees rude. I won't go there anymore, and I surely wouldn't put a penny in their tip jar.

I used to work short-order for a small restaurant. We cooks don't get tips. Of course, we're responsible for making sure your order comes out right, in a timely manner and all at the same time.

Yeah. Wish we cooks got tips.

If the drink takes a while to make and truly is perfect (and I mean COMPLETELY perfect as far as strength, temperature, etc.) I'll tip. However, I see no reason to leave a tip for someone who simply pours me a cup of coffee from the pot. There's no work involved in that!

People feel as though if they provide you with a service, they should be tipped. I am a server and I know what it's like to make $2.65/hr and be tipped less than 20%. It's a struggle to pay my bills with people like that. I would focus more on tipping the people who depend on tips and actually do something for you, versus the people who are paid well and don't do nearly as much for you.
