I assume she either watches adult tv shows or movies (PG13 or R) or she has older siblings if this question is coming up. Let her parents know so they can decide how to talk to her.

This is really a question for a parent to answer. If you niece doesn't want to talk to her mom and dad about this (completely understandable) then you should talk to them and see what response they would be comfortable with you giving their daughter.

A lot of times asking the child what they think it means will help you in your answer. Ask her in what context does she hear it in, what are the kids at school saying about masturbation? This should also help.

I do NOT recommend ignoring the question or not answering it. I find that a lot of times kids will ask other kids these questions, and they typically do not get the correct answer. While it may make you (and her parents) uncomfortable to talk to her about it, you want to establish a good, clear line of communication about sexual activities now before she gets too old and learns from somewhere else.

Good luck.

She's just about at that age when her hormones are starting to kick in. I have a cousin who, when her niece asks her questions like that, sits down with her niece and her sister-in-law (who is a nurse) and answers it the best she can with the parent present.

That's maybe a question for her parents, especially if you're unsure how to answer it...

But the answer is simply that masturbation is when a person touches their own privates because it feels good. Chances are she's already done it and just doesn't know that it has a name.

Do not answer any type of sex question for any child but your own. Always point the child to the parents and let the parents know she's asking.

Tell her to look it up in the dictionary. She's 10 years old not an infant. She probably heard it in health class and wants to know it's meaning. What's the major issue?

I would tell her it's something she will understand when she is a little older, especially if she doesn't know about sex. Ask her what she does know and try to clarify it. Ask her what she thinks it means and tell her parents to deal with it.

But I have to say, kids at that age know a lot more than we give them credit for. She is going to start asking kids at school and will get informed there.

Tell her that that is a question for her parents. If she continues asking you, call your sibling and ask them if they could PLEASE explain it to her. If they don't want to, ask if its OK for you to truthfully explain it. If they don't want you to, then you'll have to respect their wishes. If they are OK with you telling her, then just simply explain the basis of it. Don't go into detail. She's too young to worry about the details of it.

Ask her parents what they would like to do. I don't think its your place to decide what answer she hears unless you are her care provider.

"Dont say that word!- You will learn in time what that is, now is not the time. "
