It's called dissociation. It happens during panic attacks, or with certain personality disorders, and lso with migraine and with mild forms of epilepsy which are more associated with migraine (you can have headache-less migraine).

Tell him you feel that the world is not real, that it feels like you are in a terrible dream and you can't wake up. Or have him look it up on wikipedia.
