Hi,
I hope I will be able to help you. I am an optometrist and get this question quite often. Basically your eyes are going through a lot of strain. However, it sounds like your eyes are more easily strained for you. I would suggest that you don't have the screen too bright or too dark as both could be causing the strain.
This is a rule I tell my patients when using the computer. 20/20/20 - Every 20 mins, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This should help you have less strained eyes. Also make sure you have a good distance from the screen while maintaining good posture.
If problems persist, please contact an optometrist or feel free to reply to me.

it's because you dont blink your eyes at all, experienced gamers and people like us actually gain resistance to reddened eyes, you just have to work your way up to it, put the brightness to normal, and do everything normal, but you should stop and look up at something for a few seconds before looking back again, usually a window works for this purpose, or even taking a peek at a tv every once in a while works. and make sure you have some light other then your computer while its on, whether its the sun or a lamp. you dont need direct light, just some. and if none of that works for you, then i suggest easing your eyes out of focus instead of paying such great attention to everything, that can also give you a headache. and dont forget to get up and get something to drink, walk around, go to the bathroom, etc.

What you're experiencing is common now among our generation that has more interaction with Video Dislay Terminals than humans ever have before. Prolonged time spent on the computer results in dry eyes, red itchy eyes or other symptoms and you should remember to blink, look away, pace yourself and intersperse your computer tasks with other tasks. Check your environment. The monitor should be at least 25 inches from your eyes to prevent eye strain. The monitor should be between 15-degrees and 50-degrees below horizontal eye level.
Lighting: Use indirect lighting. Avoid overhead fluorescent lights.

you need to move your eyes from the computer every 20 mins to half an hour. This strain is common for anyone who does computer work constantly.
Be sure to plan a couple breaks every hour.

Make sure you are blinking your eyes. Apparently they have found people blink less often when staring at computer screens.
