Fighters in heavier divisions use a 12-14 oz glove or even a 16 oz glove if they are a big fighter. Lighter fighters usually use a 10-12 oz glove. In actual fights the gloves are usually 8 oz or 10 oz depending on the weight class. By training with a slightly heavier glove it helps give your hands a little more padding for the long rounds of bag work and also can protect your sparring partners a little more and help keep them from getting knocked out. Depending on how big you are and how hard you are hitting the bag when training should determine what oz they should be.

Regardless of your weight, train with 16 oz. gloves. The heavier weight fatigues you faster and trains the arms harder, as well as protecting you and your partner in sparring. So when you switch to a 10 or 12 for competition, it will feel light and allow you to gain some speed and strength over your normal training.
