Always check out the TSA website for current restrictions. Everything you need to know is there:

You didn't say where you are going. If you stay in the U.S., there's no customs. Customs is for when you come back from a foreign country, you have to show what you bought and pay a tax.

In your carry on, carry everything that you positively cannot do without if they lose your suitcase. So that would be meds and feminine supplies. Leave lotions and sprays in your big suitcase. You can now carry craft items but not zippo lighters, knives or guns. If you are flying on any small planes, be prepared to give up your carry on when you board, if it is one of the bigger ones. If it's a backpack, you should be ok.

Get there 2 hours early and check in at a counter with your picture id. Look for the counter that belongs to the airline you already chose. You'll receive a boarding pass and you'll hand over your luggage unless you used curbside check in.

Next, find your gate and get in line for security. Take your shoes off. Empty your pockets. Put everything into the bin so they can run it through x-ray. Walk through the metal detector. If you have any piercings, the whole process comes to a halt while they take you aside and wand you.

After you get through security, grab your stuff and get out of the way before putting your shoes on. Now you are free to wander the councourse til your plane takes off. You can shop or eat or use the toilet.

When it's time to board, they will first take care of any overbooking by announcing that you can have credits if you give up your seat and fly later. Don't fall for it. The voucher will have so many restrictions, you will never be able to use it.

Then they'll board first class, disabled, and small children. Then they'll board by rows. You will see your row assignment on your boarding pass.

When you get on the plane, you can stow you carryon overhead or under the seat in front of you. If you store it up above, please use ONLY the space right above your own seat. If someone wants to get by, stop and duck into your seat so you don't hold up the entire plane. Don't be loud or act hyper because the other passengers are now allowed to have you removed from the plane if they don't like you, and you won't get your money back.

When you get ready to land at your destination, listen for any instructions that tell you where to go for baggage pickup. In some airports, there's only one place anyway. Head right over there and watch the carousel for your suitcase. Sometimes it helps to tie a bright ribbon to the handle so you can spot it faster.

Its simple, have only carry ons. This makes it easier and assures you that you wont loose your baggage esp if u have a layover. Also try and get there like an hour early or more to beat the crowds of your flight. Have everything organized, esp your ticket and flight info. Dont bring liquids with (ex hairspray, gel, etc). This slows you WAAAAYY down when going though security because you have to get all your liquids out of your stuff. Other than that things should go pretty smoothly. Have a nice trip!

Get to the airport early. It is better to make it through security and be stuck waiting at the concourse, then to be stuck in the security line while your flight takes off without you. And have fun!! Flying is great and I love it!!
