that some protestants will blatantly twist the words of the Pope the same way they slander the Church in order to fuel their agenda? Many of them probably never even read the pope's statement, but rather listened to what others told them he said. It's much like how they have mistaken views of the Church because they follow other people's opinions and teachings.

It's a shame that people can be so blind in the 21st century when information is so readily available for anyone.

Amen, brother Raven!

I will bet that people who replied to some of the questions, that actually included a link to the Yahoo story, didn't even bother reading the article, let alone the Holy Father's statements in their entirety.

And you're right. Information is so easily accessible. I would love to challenge non-Catholics to sit down and read the Catechism. It's available on line in its entirety. Or I challenge them to at least go to the Catholic Answers website and read what the Church REALLY teaches and WHY.

I wish the folks that are upset by this would stop and think about it. The CDF is not saying Protestants are not Christians. They are saying what they've always said... that Catholicism considers a "church" to be something that is sacramental and maintained through apostolic succession. Most Protestants will themselves admit that:

1. they do not consider apostolic succession to be important, or to impart any specific graces.
2. That sacraments, even if they can be said to exist, are only symbolic, and not substantial and real.

...in other words, they agree fully and on every detail with the Pope! They in fact do not meet the Catholic standard for what constitutes a church, because they disagree with those standards!

So if everyone is in agreement.... what then is the problem exactly? :)

Actually, I think the reaction to this statement is extremely funny. If they'd bother to actually read it and read about it, much less if they knew anything about the Catholic church in the first place, they'd know first-off that this isn't a new doctrine--it's one of the oldest, and it's what the Catholic church has always considered itself to be. Not really any different than Protestant denominations who are convinced of themselves as being the only correct way, wouldn't you say? All this news does, though, is fuel their furor and make them even more convinced that they're right and Catholics are wrong... little else convinces them that they could be wrong about anything, so why would this be any different?

Yes. But I must confess that at the moment, I am feeling a little joy over it all (yes I know it is sinful to feel this). These same people have exclude Catholics and said they were bound for Hell. Now they have misunderstood a long standing doctrine and feel condemned. I trust that it will be used for the greater good of God. I pray that it will cause interest in the true teaching of the Catholic Church. And I pray that it will help Catholics grow stronger in their faith.

Yes! It's a matter of hearing what they want and believing what they want...never mind the truth. And obviously, when the do hear the truth, they do not recognize it nor understand it.

well, maybe the news is wrong,i dont know for sure.but they made it pretty clear that the pope said catholics are the only true church, and all the billions of other christians are cluelessly wrong.
i dont think we're twisting anything.he said it pretty staight foward.
once again the church shows its lack of wisdom and understanding of the meaning of being a christian.

I find it amusing that they think there are any real differences between any of the Christian denominations.
