Sadie, my pride and joy is a 12 weeks old german shepherd/lab mix. She is the smartest dog I have ever had in my life. And it doesn't take long for her to learn. Two or three times showing her and saying the command and she knows how to do it and remembers.

In the few weeks we have had her she already knows how to sit, stay, shake a paw (and the other one), come and we are working on teaching her to roll over.

The problem is I have never had a dog that has mastered all those commands and I am having such a wondersul time teaching her I want to keep going.

What are some other commands/tricks that i can teach my new puppy??

Thank you evreyone so much. These have been great suggestions. She is such an amazing dog that I do not want to waste her talent.

She can already walk without a leash. And she stays very close.

Sadie sounds like a fabulous dog.

Obedience training - that's the ticket. It's a great sport, and a well-trained dog is a joy to be around.

Far better than "tricks" and such, Obedience is where she will learn to walk quietly on a leash, come, sit, stay, heel, stand for exam, down, socialization, etc.etc.

And earning that CD title is fun in competition (where the contestants don't so much as compete against you as with you). It's truly a great sport - fun for both you and Sadie.

It's also the basis for all the other sports and activities such as agility (where she could really excel) and certified therapy dog (helping others is a great thing to do).

Look into a certified obedience course for you and Sadie - you'll be glad you did.

Teaching her to stand on her hind legs. I don't think you need any other training . Consider making her a show dog, not many dogs can learn that quickly. Maybe teach her to walk outsie without a leash. Good luck with your lab/shepherd mix

You can try "High Five" which is a variation on "Shake/Give Paw".

"Take it" and "Leave it" are excellent commands and my puppy mastered them quickly. They are very good for teaching your puppy that they can pick up or take certain things and to leave others alone. Now I can put her in a "down", put a treat on her paw and say "Leave it" and she will wait until I say "Take it" before she eats it. People find it impressive... especially in a puppy.

"Heel" is also an excellent command for her to learn to walk properly on a leash.

Good luck and enjoy your pup!

German Sheppards are great dogs! They're definitely intelligent.

You've got the simple stuff down.

So, go onto more complex things . . . play dead, beg (which if she's like most german shep's probably doesn't need much practice, just the name-act coorelation), fetch. . . you can teach her to do certain acts at certain times (teach her to ring a bell when she's hungry or has to potty).

Leave it -- asking a puppy not to eat or approach something until you say it's ok--can come very useful cuz you can keep your pup away from harmful stuff, or food that's not appropriate.

You can certainly start teaching Heel too. :) Tha's useful for it not to pull when you take her for a walk.

Enjoy your smart puppy! Sounds really sweet.

"speak" is a good one, my shepherd mix loves "up" but you need a pretty big space and a hula hoop- its great for getting out some of that puppy energy. start by having her walk through the hoop, then have her jump off something through the hoop, followed by her jumping for a treat through the hoop- eventually she will do it all on her own. :) have fun!

Does she know how to lay down and stay? That always helps. And maybe you can teach her to play dead...my friend's dog does that and it's very cute...:)
they just say, "Scooby, bang" and he lays on the ground all sprawled out. It's cute. :)

you could hold her head and put a treat on her nose. then when you let go of her head keep telling her to stay and then teach her to jump up and grap the treat. my brother's dog does that and it is the cutest thing ever.
