Yes Labs are smart and friendly dogs however they like to dig a lot so that's one thing you'll have to watch out for.

Absolutely, they are wonderful dogs and I own 4 who have been the most LOYAL dogs ever. They can shed alot but like everyone else said just groom regularly. Because of the love for this breed, I became a Lab breeder a few years ago!

I highly recommend them. They are very loving breeds. They shed but not terribly bad...just brush them once a day. Labs are very loyal. I had a black lab as a child and he was the greatest dog ever. He would get so excited to see us even if we were only gone for 5 minutes.

Labrador retrievers are the number one family pet dog in the U.S. They are one of the nicest breeds.
The pluses - well tempered, gentle, playful, obedient, intelligent, loyal, easily trained, versatile (many service dogs are labs) and level-headed.
The minuses - yes, they shed their under-coat in the spring - soft fine hairs every where. They're larger dogs - anywhere from 50 - 100 pounds. Require regular strenuous exercise (great running companion, though) proper obedience training, and very old labs can be smelly because of the oils in their coat.
But all in all, the lab is one of the nicest breeds of dog you could ever ask for.
Best bet: contact a lab breeder or hunting association for an adult pet-quality dog. at least an adult will more or less be done with the chewy stage.

If you get a Lab, invest in a good vacuum cleaer and prepare to fnd hair EVERYWHERE!!!
Labs are typically loyal, fun-loving family dogs. However they can also be destructive chewers and have a lot of energy (whihc requires a lot of exercise as an appropriate outlet). Some Labs will eat you out of house and home.
I would speak to Lab owners and breeders to find the Pros and Cons of the breed. You don't need to buy from a breeder, but any breeder should be happy to talk to you about Labs, even if you end up adopting.

Yes i would get one, they are beautiful and loyal dogs they are affectionate to all people and they are great with kids. They do shed but I wouldn't say a lot they are a short hair breed so they mainly shed in the spring to early summer when they are shedding their winter coat. All it takes to keep your home hair free is vaccuming once a week or brushing the dog often. They also love water so take the dog outside and let them play in water and then brush them wet so more loose fur comes off their coats.

I would not have any other kind. They are so loving and loyal and sweet. if you work with them they can learn anything. when needed they are very protective. they do shed but if you brush them it cuts down on the hair and they love it.
you want a lab if you are looking for a friend for life.

We have a Lab mix and she is a good dog. Very loyal but most dogs are if treated right! If you brush your dog and bathe on a regular basis you should not see much shedding! Hope this helps! Enjoy your dog when you get one, they are great!! We have added 3 dogs and a cat plus a parakeet to our family and I want more!! :)

Very loyal, does shed a LOT. Maybe think about a Great Dane. Or if that's too big, think about a cross breed. Most cross breeds have less medical problems that a pure breed. One dog I have always liked is the pure black German Shepard. Looks like a wolf.
