All I get are answers like, "I believe it because its true." How do you know its true? Have you ever looked at other "scriptures?" Have you ever posed an objective question.

Father K, did you see jesus come back? Or is it in the book that you are trying to promote? That's called circular reasoning.

What would I consider a GOOD reason...."the book I believe in has been proven to be the ultimate truth and contains no flaws what so ever. Nothing in this book contradicts established science. This book is a perfect moral guide that needs no interpretation. This book is 100% compatable with an enlightened view of morality and does not contain stories about talking animals."
That would be a good answer to me.

Mrs. M "the book say that the book is true" is not a very good answer. I want to know why people choose to believe the way that they do, is that so wrong? Everyone keeps saying how their beliefs are right but they can never explain why. I just want a "why."

I was raised christian, but was always slightly skeptical because of what I actually saw as opposed to what was being preached. When I went to college I took a few world religions courses and learned about many different beliefs and how they came to be, and that was enough to make me an Atheist.
But, I'm surrounded by christians who seem to think that they have a better grasp of reality than I do, and constantly try to "save" me and lead me to Jesus. They attack with bible scriptures, claiming god said this, god did that, blah blah blah.. when I asked them why god didn't tell everyone the same thing at the same time they make excuses, or say that he did and people just didn't listen. Since logic doesn't seem to work, right now I'm fighting back with Hebrew scriptures about the Messiah. Jesus didn't fulfill them, but christians don't know that.
They never look at the scriptures they claim prophecied Jesus, and don't know that most of them aren't prophecies, but songs, poems, or stories about other people taken say out of context. I realize that they want to see what they want to see, and will deny everything else, but they need to see, since they make up such a large part of our democratic society.

How about providing what would be classified as a GOOD reason to you? From what I've seen of your posts you are not searching for wisdom or understanding or knowledge. You appear to be searching for opportunities to support or validate your atheistic tendencies and that is fine. It's your perogative, but I'm sure that even the most well thought out response to your posts from people of faith would evoke even further pejorative questioning.
As for your question of which book is "true"...you will receive different responses based on varying belief systems.
However, should you choose to read and study them all you would be sure to find there are universal truths in them.
(EDIT)
This above "accusation" can be confirmed by your response to Father K and his well thought out, studied answer.
(EDIT2)
No, hon. It is not wrong to want a "why" to your question. Why is a very good question. The problem with asking it is that if we ask why (or any question for that matter) we have to be open to the idea that the answer may be something we don't agree with. Your response to what makes a GOOD reason is unrealistic. Even you in your un-believing nature can see that EVERYthing is open to interpretation - EVERYthing. So, you either need to learn to accept the answers you get as FACT "to" those who answer or you should stop asking the question. Otherwise you might find that people will start saying, "Boy that R.C. guy keeps asking the same thing over and over and keeps expecting different responses". Do you hear it?

Whats the point? I could set here for months and try to explain it to you, but most nonbelievers are just set on doing nothing but arguing. People have been asking this question for as long as I've been here in YA and no one seems to take the answers they are given as truth. So whats the point of rehashing? For me, the bible represents history as well as a basic structure for living. It is also a reference guide as to what is going to come to be in the future. When you stop and consider that the telling of Christ on the cross was recorded two thousand years before it actually happened (among other things) it has a good record for truth. And I also believe that the words in this book is a letter to me from my Creator.
If this is not good enough for you, so be it. If this is something in which you can use for entertainment, so be that, as well. It doesnt matter because what I believe and what I feel is no more or no less important than what you believe and feel. Everyone has to account to themselves and then to God - believer or not - eventually.

How can you pose an objective question to a very subjective issue? You are receiving perfectly adequate answers to the question you pose. The problem is that you have a your own idea of what the answer SHOULD be. When you ask some one the perfectly objective question "Why do you like the color green?" but green give you headaches and fits of nausea, there already is no acceptable answer to you. If some says the just like green, you can't accept that. And if you can accept that, why can you not accept any ones answer to your "objective" question about personal opinion/belief?
If you want an objective answer, start with an objective question.

I'm quite enchanted at the moment with the Tao Te Ching. Some things it says are things I always thought and was delighted to see put so eloquently, other things were things I learned on my spiritual journey, and there's more I don't quite get but I try very hard to understand. I want to try out its wisdom... maybe eventually I'll move to something else.
I've looked at many scriptures :-)
I don't generally ask questions in this section but in my other areas of interest my questions are objective and really looking for advice.

I have received my own witness. I prayed to God and received an answer confirming the truth of the Bible as well as the Book of Mormon. My goal is not to convince you that either book is right. I already know that for myself, and my witness of the truth of it is all I need.
If you really want to know if I am right, I suggest you read the Book of Mormon or at least part (Maybe 3 Nephi as well as Moroni chapter 10) and then do as Moroni invites you to do which is to ask God if it is true with real intent.

Holy Books are Harmeless. They are based on goodness. I dont know if its scripture is true or not, but until its preaching goodness, its okay to follow it. Lets follow goodness instead of truth, then(?)

I follow the Bible for many reasons. One being is it gave me what it said it would. Joy plain and simple. I have joy everyday. It also provides me with peace each and everyday. I also have the knowledge of someday soon being with the Lord Jesus Christ forever and ever. It has never had to change anything written in it. There are no contradictions in it as many claim. Having a relationship with the Lord is something that can not be explained in mere words its a wonderful blessing. I hope you to repent and be baptized and perhaps we will meet in that glorious place we call Heaven. Peace out...............

I follow the bible, Why? because when you review other books such as the Koran, or listen to other spiritual leaders you find that there is a lack of faith. There is nothing ot believe in except works. There is no forgiven of sin; and most important, there is no one dying for your sins so you won't have too. And when you study the bible you see the works of God unfold and salvation being given to all that believe in His Son. That my friend is a good enough reason as any.

Because they might not have an answer different that that.
I follow the Bible because I believe it to be true. Yes this belief may be a leap of faith I guess thats why they call it that I spose.
I have not read other "Holy Books" I would like to but right now my leap remains with the Bible.
