I'm new to golf (so don't laugh please :P), but when purchasing a putter I noticed that some were designed like a traditional putter (flat, rectangular) but some had differently designed and 'fancy' club heads... what is the difference? Is there an advantage based on the design?

Choosing a putter is like choosing a wife or husband. Everybody has their own opinion, and you just have to find what's right for you. And no matter which one you choose, somebody will say you should have made a different choice.

The fancy designs tend to have more weight in the putter head. Some also have markings to help you line up the putt. They may also have the weight distributed differently to keep you from turning the putter head during your stroke.

I use a traditional putter design because it doesn't do any of that, except that it does have a line to help me line up the putt.

Whether something is an advantage depends solely on how you feel when you putt.

Go to a store that has a practice putting area, spend some time trying out putters, and pick the one that you like best.

The biggest difference in putter designs is the traditional style and belly putter style. Traditional style is when only your hands touch the putter. Belly styles have longer shafts so you use your belly as a pivot point. There are many variations in putter head designs, grips, etc. that are tailored to people's personal preferences. All the variations create a range of different weights, balances, aiming sites, loft, shaft angle and so on. Everybody is different and with so many different preferences there are a million different putters to choose from so choose wisely. The putter is the most important club in golf.

Important: Don't buy an expensive putter! My putter was only 40 dollars and it is a regular Wilson putter. I putt better than all my friends and we all shoot in the 70's. The two-ball is a gimmick, like most of the large back putters. I suggest buying a cheap regular looking putter. If you want to putt well, line up your ball using the text on the side of the ball ( ex. <-Pro V1->) on the line that you think the putt will go in the hole, and you won't need an expensive putter.

ther are blade putters and mallet putters. a blde i think gives u more control of the putter head at least for me. a mallet again i think gives u a lil bit less control to me. i have a blade and mallet putter. try a 2ball putter ther good.
