So I take it this is about mormons then. Considering they are the only ones I know of that require a 10% tithe to the church. Personally, I like the catholic version of giving what you can instead of it being required of you.
I think I would rather help my parents out than the church.

One doesn't have anything do to with the other. Christians are called to tithe, to give God the "first fruits" to further the work of the Kingdom. This is part of a Biblical world view. Those who don't have this view won't understand it. Second, however, Christians are also called to honor their mother and father. If they need something, we should help. But your post indicates that the parents are "well off" so why would you give to the parents? No where is it ordered that we need to give our parents 1%. Nice try though...

9. Giving to God
It was once said that the wallet is the "last frontier"-- that it’s the last thing that comes to God in surrender. But it should be the first, along with our surrendered heart. Jesus spoke much about money. He said that we cannot serve God and mammon (see Matthew 6:24). The word "mammon" was the common Aramaic word for riches and it signifies "that which is to be trusted." In other words, either money is our source of joy, our sense of security, the supplier of our needs -- or God is.
When you give, make sure you do so with a cheerful heart. Our giving should be a systematic and purposeful giving to the church where we fellowship (see 2 Corinthians 9:7). It should be in response to need (see Acts 11: 27-29). It should be sacrificial (see Galatians 2:10), and should be done in secret with a humble heart (see Matthew 6:1-4). It is a key to spiritual fruit (see Luke 16:10-11).

I believe in tithing. I even do it myself. See, tithing is when one person gives 10% to the church. Because the money that we own isnt really ours. It is God's money and God requires us to give Him 10% of our salary and it usually goes to the church so they can pay the bills or pay for any equipment needed..

Much of what my church receives not only gives to the needy, but it also pays the bills to keep the church running. . .like electricity and water. If I am a part of anything I think I should help support it in anyway. Whether it is church, school or Little League. I try to give where I can to wherever I see a need.
And, my pastor does not profit from our church. He and his wife both work outside of the church to supply their personal financial needs. And, lol. . . .my pastor has probably never even sat in a 60K vehicle. . .I haven't either, lol.
Truth is whether one is religious or not everyone should give in any way they can to help those along that are struggling because one day it could be any of us needing a hand.

I have no problem with tithing. As a christian I believe it is part of our duty. Tithing supports the up keep of churches, pays ministers and staff, and fund charities and ministries. God gives me 100% daily the least I can give is 10% to support the upkeep of the ministrie.

Tithing is a very touchy issue. I believe the Bible actually says 10% of everything that is owned - not just salary.
Any-who, I think it's personal preference. I personally do not tithe financially, but I give to the Church in other ways through volunteering and services.
I know of some people who will literally go without food, skip paying their bills and whatnot in order to tithe weekly. I think that's a tad extreme. I don't think God wants us to deprive ourselves of necesities in order to "give" to a man-made institution (church). I think He is way more interested in the purity and sincerity of our faith and our hearts.

It's not our money~ It's God's~ We are stewards of it.
Look at Malachi 3
Will a man rob God?
Yet you have robbed Me!
But you say,
'In what way have we robbed You?'
In tithes and offerings.
You are cursed with a curse,
For you have robbed Me,
Even this whole nation.
Bring all the tithes into the storehouse (church),
That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this,"
Says the Lord of hosts,
"If I will not open for you the windows of heaven
And pour out for you such blessing
That there will not be room enough to receive it.
And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes,
So that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground,
Nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field."
Says the Lord of hosts;
If we want the windows of heaven to be opened up for us and blessing poured out on us, we will tithe. If we want God to rebuke the devil for us then we will tithe.
The bible also says in the gospels to Give and it shall be given to you, pressed down, shaken together, and running over.
If we give to God FIRST, He will provide more than enough money to help our parents.
God Bless!

"but not even giving their not well-off parents 1 percent per month?"
Says who? I tithe and if my mother needed help, I'd help her. What's the problem?

Tithing is not part of the New Covenant Church. Free will giving is. Giving should not be done out of law or compulsion, but as the Spirit leads us. We are given the privilege to share in God's work on earth, whether it is the preaching of the word or giving to help someone in need. We are not under law, but grace.
