How would I go about replacing the Cigarette Lighter in my 98' Ford Escort?

Having a hard time figuring out if i have to take out the plastic console around it and how to pry the lighter out to replace it.

On a Ford if you try to pry the lighter socket out it will damage it. The lighter and power point sockets are a 2 piece design, one goes in from the dash side and the other is a threaded sleeve that screws on around the first part and holds it in. You will have to remove the plastic trim panel that the lighter is mounted in to replace it.

well I'm positive that you will have to take the panel out, because all cars from the 90's on have EVERYTHING covered by panels, and as far as prying out the lighter, i would just stick a rivet tool (tool that you use to pry rivets out in a door panel) under the lighter and pry it up, but before you go through all that trouble, i would look on the other side of the panel and see if there is a screw attaching it, because if you go prying something that isn't supposed to be pried (common sense) something is going to break lol... good luck
