My left knee gives me problems at times especially when I walk. I do have Arthritis and I do take Motrin as needed. Why does my left knee seem to bother me more in the summer time than in the winter?

I asked my rheumatologist about this one time during one of my visits and he told me that there are a certain few people that have a problem with heat instead of cold. The way he described it was like this: hot, cold, wet, dry.

At first I wasn't sure what this meant and then it dawned on me that even though many people do better in warmer weather there are a certain few that do have a problem, especially if they live in an area that has high humidity during the summer.

In the summer, you tend to retain water by drinking a lot of liquids because of the heat, and also the heat can cause swelling when walking a lot. Some people's ankles swell in the summer, again, retaining fluids, being humid, not being able to sweat because of the heat and humidity. The more humid, the less the body is able to release body heat and fluids through the pours and the more uncomfortable you are versus winter, when your body may ache, but you won't have the swelling as you will in the summer time.

Also, if you are over a certain age, the wear and tear of tendons and cartilage wears down, especially if you are over weight. This is the reason some people need a knee replacement due to less or no cartilage in the knee socket. Age can play a significant part of your problem, coupled with arthritis. Continue taking the Motrin, (my drug of choice), and as long as you can tolerate the pain, continue walking and exercising when you can; this can only help.

Personally, I know that I wear shoes less in the summertime. For people (like us) with knee problems, we should always try to be wearing footwear that supports our feet well. Regardless, though--something on your feet is better than walking directly on the concrete or hard ground.

Also, you might be more active in the summertime. Going to "fests" and amusement parks means you're on your feet more than normal...and it adds up.
