For the past 4 years, I have been struggling with a personal situation between the love of my life and my parents (they dont get along). I truly belive that prayer changes things. But every time I go to pray for help on my situation, I start to feel like I'm being selfish. I haven't been to church in a few years, and I know I'm letting myself get further and further from God. I always feel like I should first pray for forgiveness of my wrong-doings, and that I shouldn't ask God to answer my prayers until I start living right. Is this the correct way to think, or should I just go to God whenever I feel the need, regardless of what I want to pray about?
Thanks.

Can you see how much guilt and bad feelings religion has brought into your life? It's torturing you. If you give up the idea of god and "sins" and still manage to live a good life as a good person you would be able to live without this guilt compulsion to go to church.

As it is you are allowing someone else (god/church) to decide how you should live your life. You are allowing them to do so by believing in the ideas they have indoctrinated you with. Free yourself from these artificial constraints and you will free yourself from this irrational guilt you are feeling.

If you're a good person it doesn't matter whether or not you go to some church or live your life in the manner prescribed by a church official. Free yourself from the shackles you have allowed them to place on you and start accepting responsibility for all aspects of your life.

First of all, try asking for forgiveness first and spend a few minutes talking to God and trying to be 'close' to Him before you start asking Him to answer your prayers. In the longer term, you could gradually start making changes to your life so that you are more in tune with what you believe God wants you to do, and then you might feel less guilty when you pray if you know you are making the effort. Good luck xx
