I have been riding 20 miles a few times a week on hilly roads. I rode 50 once, but felt it. I want to ride 100 by the fall, if I keep riding and work up, will I have enough time to be ready by then?

Sure but do it as part of an organized ride so you have support.

David,

This should be no problem. You will need to keep riding the 20 mile option a few times a week but make sure to be intense in doing so. This will help your cardio. You should do at least one ride a week that is longer, such as a 50 miler. This doesn't have to be as fast but the miles are the key. If you decide that saturday's will be your long option start making it longer. First 30, then 40, then 50. Ideally you would do 60-70 the weekend before your 100 attempt. If you do this you should be fine.
Also on you longer rides you will need to have lots of water and some food. A few power bars should do the trick. A bottle of water an hour is the equation. If you don't have a place to stop for water on your route you'll need a camel back.

Hope this helps!

I'm going to speak in generalizations so bear with me. Generally, you can handle up to 3 times your long ride in one day. That means that if you normally ride 20 miles at a time, you can handle a 60 mile ride. I could hurt a lot, but you can physically do it. Now following that logic, if you're normal ride is approximately 35 miles, you can handle 100. But be careful. Try to work up your weekly mileage slowly. Increase your long rides during the weekends. Try to get up to 35 or 45 miles. When attempting the 100 be sure eat and rink plenty. 100 is very different than 50. Your body will need to replenish its fluid and fuel resources.

The best part of being a road cycler is that you never know what will happen.
I suggest that you either increase your mileage a day, or start cycling almost everyday.
Some of my friends started cycling about 10 miles a day and now they can bike through several counties and back in a matter of hours. They are insane!
If you are willing to work your butt off for it, Healthy Diet, Weight lifting, etc. Then I believe you can even go over 100 miles in a single day.
Good Luck!

100 miles around a track, or 100 miles doing (50-50) round trip on some route you'll be taking? Hard to say man, not impossible, but if it's like all uphill for most of the way and your route coming back is different and it's also mostly up hill, then 100 is a lot of road to cover...

Good luck though, hope you do it. If you do, tell us.

Yes you can. If you have made it to 50 already, you have all the time you need to hit 100. Keep riding, every few weeks kick it up ten miles and make your last ride 80+. You will be able to do 100 as long as you pace yourself correctly.

I don't know where you live, but there are organized rides almost every weekend in most places. Join a club or check for announcements at your local bike stores.
Headphones are considered dangerous but I hook a little radio onto my bike and listen to ball games or music.
Just keep adding more and more distance to your rides. If it is windy or rainy don't expect as much in results but practicing in all conditions helps. Keep a nice pace and save sprinting for last few miles.
Food and water strategy also become more important after several hours on the road.

You really need to get comfortable with the 50-60 mile range. I recommend that you include at least one ride per week in that range. Once you are comfortable with that, 100 miles should be no problem. Also, starting spinning once or twice a week to really build up the cardio.

Yes, all these are possible provided that you are in good health and having the stamina to reach that distance with determination and perseverance.
Do not exert your self too much or there could be adverse effects done to your body and health.

Work in stages and set reasonable targets of achievements each day or week.
Sure, you will be able to accomplish 100miles if you cycle for every 1mile to stop and rest for 20 mins you will finally reach there even if it will take the whole day, tell your self that once it is done it is accomplished. Don't stop go all the way to reach your goal.

Best regards,
Jeff.

Yes, it is completely possible.

Just make sure you are cross training as well, weights for your legs, back, abs and torso. This will make your body stronger, and make it easy to hold the perfect riding position for longer which will enable you to ride for longer.

Keep up the daily riding, and good nutrition.
