You don't say where you are traveling and there are different rules in different countries. Also, Washington, D.C. has stricter rules than even NY when flying out. The answers above tell you all about the sharp objects that are not allowed. Also, all toiletries that you will carry on must fit in a QUART size zip lock bag and it must be able to zip all the way so you can't cram it and leave it open. That includes all lipstick, mascara, deodorant, hair spray (pump spray only), eye make up remover, toothpaste, etc. And all must be 3 ounces or less. You will need to put those in a bin outside of your carry on for screening. So, if you are checking a bag, put it all in there unless you want a lipstick or gloss to use on the plane. Wear slip off shoes as you will have to take off your shoes and walk barefoot thru the magnatometer. Some airports have paper footies to slip on for that or wear socks. I hate the thought of being barefoot where thousands have also walked barefoot. You will also have to take off any sweater, jacket or coat. In London you may only carry one small carry on item, the size is strictly limited to about the size of a work briefcase. No additional items like a purse may be carried. I did get past this once by carrying a small bag and had a purse that was convertable to a backpack which I used that way. Any computer has to be taken out of it's case and put thru the mag by itself in a bin.
I am at the point now that I carry very little with me and just buy some small shampoo, toothpaste, moisturizer and other toiletries when I arrive and I throw or give them away when I leave. It's much simpler. Have a wonderful trip and don't forget to take your camera! By the way, don't ever check a camera or computer or other expensive electronic items. You probably will never see them again.

It might be better to say what ISN'T allowed:

- Sharp objects, such as knives, scissors (even small cuticle scissors), nail clippers.
- Obviuosly, any exploding devices or weapons, including fireworks
- Flammable materials, including lighter fluid
- Pressurised containers.
This last item catches a lot of people out, because it includes things like hair spray and spray deodorant.

In general, you can carry a carry on bag (a make-up bag would be fine, but don't forget you may have scissors confiscated), camera, coat or raincoat (you may want to wear a coat, which you can take off when on board), laptop computer (airport security may want to check it), book, magazine, writing material.
Most airlines put a size limit, and a weight limit on bags (typically 5 kg or 11lb, but many people get away with more. It depends on the airline. When you get your tickets, the regulations will be printed on them (or on the web site, if you book over the internet)

Some of the things don't make sense. I've had small penknives confiscated (never to be seen again), but I am hardly capable of highjacking a plane with one of those.

hey there, i recently took a flight from london stansted and you could not bring any drinks through check in, but once in the departure lounge you can purchase drinks then. it is best to put most of your gel/liquid toiletaries in your hold luggage, I hated this too as i usually like carrying them in my hand luggage just in case! also sharp objects like the obvious knives etc, but also tweezers and if like me you have sharper hair accessories they might be confiscated aswell. enjoy your trip xx
