yes i tottally think that would be okay to ask! I mean you never know someone in the older room might want to be with younger ones and you could just switch! I think it would be better if you told her because if your not comfortable with the kids you will be nervous and babys can feel tension which makes them tense. I think she would rather you tell her than keep it from her and that way you would enjoy your job!

I've worked in a preschool, and for the most part be honest with your boss. Let him/her know how you feel. This will not ensure, however, that you'll be placed with the older kids, but it'll up your chances. Also, when you work at a preschool, you have to gain experience working with all the age groups. I always preferred to work with the 5 and 6 year-olds in the Kindergarten class, but many times had to stay with the 2's and 3's. I found the younger kids to be less independent (of course), but more affectionate and trusting. Trust me, you'll find something special and charming about each age group.

If still you find it difficult, let your boss know that you feel that you'd do a better job with the older children. Regardless of where you're placed, they will more than likely have you "float" to other classes on occassion. Don't feel uncomfortable talking to your boss. Many people who work in childcare prefer a certain age group and will request working with them more than you'd know.

Good luck.

One year olds are definitely harder to care for. That may be why your boss slated that as your first duty. If you can handle them, then you're more likely to handle the older ones too.

I wouldn't request a change, but I would politely inquire about your rotation through the other age groups. You could mention at that time that the 3+ are your forte. Your boss' reply will tell you what your future with that day care will be like.

The problem is most people don't want to work with the 1 year olds either.

Ask you boss and see if you can't work something out but don't hope from too much.

I work at a preschool and I am just the opposite. Have you given it more then one week with the babies. If you have, just bring it up to your boss casually. Tell her/him that you think you would be better with the toddlers. You wont be fired- she/he will most likely say yes and switch you. GOOD LUCK!!!

you should give the 1 yr olds a try, and you could ask your boss if its a possibility to work with the older kids, but you should still try and make an effort, you never know you might like it

i would let your boss know after your shift that you would prefer to switch to an older room if it becomes available, but you have to stick it out for a while. also, try talking to some of the caregivers from the ages you like, maybe they are looking to switch

Just ask, unless your boss is psychic, how are they supposed to know what you want? So ask and find out.
