My son is getting married this coming February and I am clueless as to what to wear. I'm not rich, but I could start to save money now.
Please, serious, helpful answers only.
Thanks so much.

It is very appropriate for the mother of the groom to wear a "mother of the bride" type dress or pantsuit. You can find one in the wedding colors or ivory or champagne is always a great safe color to go with, and it can be worn to any other formal event you may need to go to in the future. Since you have plenty of time before the wedding, start looking now. Since it is the middle of the summer, more wintery outfits should be on sale. Check at bridal shops, department stores in the formal wear sections, even bridal consignment or resell shops, most of those were probably only worn once! Best wishes!

Not white for sure !:) I would find a nice dress, make sure t will not clash with the colors the bridesmaids are wearing. Also, find out what color HER mom is wearing, you don't want to wear the same. They do sell mother of the bride or groom dresses at the wedding shops but they are way expensive. I would find one at a mall instead. Maybe JC Pennys, Sears, something less like that. Or even Kohl's, not sure what they have around you. Also, Feb is cooler but it's always HOT at the reception. So, I'd go for a short sleeve type dress with a cute little jacket, so you can take the jacket off once you get dancing but have it on during pics, etc. Good Luck and have fun! And remember, most people are busy checking out the bride so don't think you need to spend big bucks on it!

Hi Maxine,
Congratulations on your son's wedding. When my son got married I wore a tan suit with a fuscia blouse. You are very lucky that your son is getting married in February because you will be able to take advantage of all the sales on "special seasonal dresses and pants suits." Remember, Christmas was just a couple of months ago and during January all the clothing stores will be having big sales. If you can't afford to buy something, you can always search your closet for clothes you haven't worn in a little while and update them with beautiful jewelry (even if it's costume it can still be beautiful) and accessories. Most people will be focusing on the bride and groom, not the mom of the groom so just focus on having a great time at your wedding.

Wear a nice dress or suit. You should coordinate with the wedding party, but you do not need to match the bridesmaids. The proper etiquette for the mother of the groom is to wait until the mother of the bride has her dress and then choose something that will coordinate (don't match or clash) with what she is wearing.

If you're still not sure, the bride should be able to give you some pointers.

Also, theknot.com has some tips for the "rules" regarding mother of the groom clothes.

I got married this past Febraury and my mother(mother of the bride) got a great dress from Lord and Taylor and she got it on sale- it was gorgeous- she got such a deal that her shoes were almost as much as the dress!!! Find something you are comfortable with, some people ask the mother of the bride what color they are wearing so they can kind of coordinate or to make sure they dont wear the same color(i dont see the big deal in that though)

and dont start driving yourself crazy about it my mother didnt go shopping or get her dress until 3 weeks before!! I know it sounds crazy and my MIL was driving herself nuts shopping for months and finally found hers 5 weeks before!

A nice dress, it doesn't have to be expensive, you can hit up department stores during sales time, depending on the formality of the whole event is how you should base what you wear... For example.. if it is an evening wedding, wear a formal dress.. if it is a day wedding, something more simple would be appropriate.

Generally, a dress that coordinates with the wedding colors...but you're supposed to connect with the mother of the bride, to be sure that you're not wearing the same thing (theoretically, the MOB buys hers first, and then calls you to discuss it).

For example...If the wedding colors are navy blue and silver, and the bridesmaids are wearing navy...then perhaps the mother of the bride would choose a sky blue dress, and you could find one in cornflower.

Regardless, be sure to pick a shade that works with your skin tone and hair color. Look for one that compliments the shape of your body. Don't pick one just because it looks like it matches...it's more important to look good in another color than it is to match.

Well you want something that makes you look good. And if the wedding is formal you will want something pretty special.
Try nice dresses in blue or green -depending on the colors of the wedding party. You want similar but not exactly the same.

First of all you didn't say what your body type is. That is one of the most important things in buying your outfit. One thing for sure, stay away from florals. Keep it simple, remember, less is more. A good place to go and look for ideas is on the website. Google it. Mother of the groom dresses. It will give you many ideas. I hope this helps.

A beautiful, elegant dress in a colour and style you love that makes you look and feel wonderful! It doesn't have to be superfancy, but something special - and even something with a bit of sparkle makes it fancy. My sisters, as mothers of grooms, have always gone with a long dress or long skirt/jacket combo even if the wedding wasn't formal.
