OLDER BATS commonly crawl on the ground. It's just too much work for them to fly. If he does not LOOK injured then he probably isn't. Don't listen to what all these people are saying about rabies and euthanasia and crap. Either leave him there or call a WILDLIFE refuge to pick him up. I wouldn't call a humane society because they don't specialize in bats and will probably just kill him. honestly, there is nothing unusual about it.

Bats can sometimes just crash and be too weak to take off again, especially during a cold spell. Only an experienced bat handler should make the decision about whether he needs to be euthanased and this should be none properly and humanely.

They can have rabies so you do need to be careful but you should be able to get him in a box using gloves and/or a towel without putting yourself at risk.

Edited to add - it is not illegal to handle a bat in the UK if you are doing so to rescue a sick or injured bat

Then find a wildlife group or bat handler in your area to help. I would avoid animal control or a vets as they won't have the experience to deal with him and will probably just put him to sleep.

Stay away from the bat- bats that are found in this condition nearly always have rabies- the teeth are so small and sharp that you can actually be bitten without realizing it. If you have already handled the bat in any way, you need to contact the local health department or animal control- they can do tests on the bat to determine if you'll need rabies shots.

okay first off dont touch him cause he could carry rabies and they are the no 1 of rabies carriers and definately keep any other animals away from it . call animal control and the health dept as this is an emergency sittuation they need to properly dispose of it . The ppl at animal control should know this . My son when he was little he saw a raccoon get hit by a car and he felt so bad for it that he scooped it on a shovel and it was still alive I called animal control out and they told me to call the wildlife and game commision so maybe they might help you as well . good luck just dont touch it . for your own safety as well .

Do not touch it!! If is isn't flying it may be ill. Call your local DNR if you can, they will remove it. If you can, without coming into very close contact with it try to put a close basket over it to prevent other animals from eating it. It may have rabies, not flying is a sign of that because rabies attacks an animals nervous system.

bats are one of the most common carriers of rabies. Put him out of his misery with the back of a shovel and bury him where a dog or cat won't dig him up.

Its not always the humane thing to try to nurse an animal back to health. They often suffer and die in the end anyway. Animals are part of the circle of life and live in a world of constant danger and predation etc. Try to see the larger long term picture and do what you think is in the best interests of all involved. But please, bats and skunks carry rabies a lot more often than other species.

He could have broken a wing and you just can't see it. Don't touch him as bats carry a lot of deceases and you would not like that.
Call your Local Animal Control and tell them what you found they will come and get it..
Don't leave him in your back yard while you go party, if a cat finds him and tries to kill it the cat could get sick and spend whatever the bat is carrying...

If you're in the UK then it's illegal to handle him as bats are a protected species. You should call the RSPCA immediately and they'll put you in touch with bat rescue. Bats are very fragile and need an expert to help them if they're in trouble. He could be injured or sick.

call your local animal control office. This is listed under your city in the address books or information ( 411) on your telephone. If you can not find one, call a local veterinarian near you and they can also help. Don't touch it or interrupt the area if possible until you call someone. Good luck!:>)
