Mary wasn't a single parent.
She was engaged at the time of the pregnancy and got married soon afterwards.

There is a small possibility that Mary was a virgin and Jesus was her twin lying dormant in her womb but born later and she had to make up the story about god being the father etc.
People would more readily believe the `god` version at that time rather than a medical hiccup. She would not have been believed at the time, and she was probably a bit confused about it also.
A similar happening took place in 1955 in England, I was in Malta at the time, and the Maltese government banned the News of the World and other Sunday newspapers because it printed the story of the `virgin birth,` and proved it, and the Maltese, being strong Catholic had it kept from them because the truth of the story blew their religion and belief to pieces. Their world revolved around the `virgin birth` as a miracle. Same thing in Ireland.
However, people are so brainwashed that they will not believe the truth, or medical science or anything that shatters their tiny little world; they prefer to stay ignorant - it`s easier and doesn`t need much thinking about. Which is good for them because it doesn`t need much brainwork to believe in miracles, just blind faith covers that.
That`s the basis of most religions.
Just one more thing: the landlady`s 18 year old daughter was told by her Maltese parents that all bablies were imported from America.
I leave you to work out why. But it`s something to do with sex.

I very much doubt it. Any way, Joseph was a saint, he stood by her, even if he didn't believe her story about the angel Gabriel 'announcing' the birth. I think the point is that she was a virgin. Virgo intacta. Not quite the same thing as an unmarried mother. And if you believe that then... No, I'm not going to say it. Draw your own conclusion.

Where's your proof that 'most' single mothers don't know who the father of their baby is? That's a very big generalisation.
In any case, Mary was married to Joseph and he raised Jesus in the knowledge that he wasn't the biological father so not a single parent family at all.

She most certainly wasn't the first single parent and nor was she a virgin. I heard that Jesus' father was most probably a Roman soldier as that was very common in those parts at the time!

I don't think prehistoric people had marriage ceremonies, so they were technically single parents (although probably only with one partner once they'd settled, as *most* modern people are).
In fact, many early civilisations didn't have marriage in the very early days...

Yes, surely she was the first person in history to have a child out of wedlock or be abandoned by the father.
Does this mean all those who did it after her, were merely trying to follow her holy example?

You need to read Matthew about Mary. And Joseph. This is Mary & Joseph who raised Jesus from infancy.
