Hi!
Some cat food manufacturers say you can start at 6 months old or as late as 1.5 years old. Personally, we're starting our cat now, and he's between 11 and 12 months old. Unfortunately he loves his kitten food and isn't enjoying the new stuff!
Kittens are still growing until 1 year of age and therefore it is not wise to feed them adult food any younger than 8 months of age. Kitten food is formulated for the kitten's needs, so why take risks?
You definitely don't need to start worrying about it yet. Wait until he is at least 11 months old, then gradually introduce the adult food over the space of a week or two, mixing more in with his food each day until you are left with only adult food.

A cat is physically mature at 8 - 10 months old. Most food companies recommend 12 months, before going on to adult food. Ever wondered why?
Kitten food is dearer! Though totally unnecessary as all it basically is is the adult food with more calories added, usually from a source like rice! Once they are weaned kittens can eat exactly the same food as adults, just make sure it's the best you can afford, and give them several smaller meals than you do an adult.
Kitten food was unheard of 14 years ago which is the age of my eldest very fit male! My last kitten now 3 years old would only eat from the same bowl at the same time as the male anyway and I wasn't going to buy an 11 year old kitten food or feed him that often. My vet told me she didn't need it anyway! (He had nothing to lose as I didn't buy their food from him.)

I started my cats on adult food when they were about 10 months old. It doesn't really matter when you start giving them adult food but kitten food contains a lot more of the nutrients they need to grow into big strong adults and they recomend you continue on kitten food until they are 12 months but I don't think it matters all that much so make the change when you feel your cats are ready.

The feline specialist for whom I work suggests changing from kitten to adult food at 6 months. I received a kitten at 5 weeks who would never eat kitten food. Went right on to the "lite" my other cats were eating.

When he is about 1 year old.
At that time it is best not to completely change the food in one go, mix the new and the old together in the beginning and slowly give more adult food and less kitten food.

You should be feeding your cat adult cat food by now.
Make the change gradually so you don't upset his tummy.
Felix in gravy or jelly is a favourite for my cats and Purina one is a good dry food to give as extra.
As your kitty is now 5 months old he will be old enough to be neutered in a few weeks time. May I suggest that you get him done before he is 10 months old otherwise he will start spraying and fighting and going missing, if your don't.
Good luck to you and your kitten.

They suggest 12 months to do the transition from kitten food to adult food and then again at 7 years from adult food to senior food.
Hope this helps

You can start feeding your kitten adult food now. I never fed my cats kitten food for very long - maybe only for the first 2-3 months.
