Depends on how large a living space you have, but if you are going to take it on 3 mile walks, you can get the breeds that require walking, the high energy sort...like a Jack Russel, for a smaller dog, or a Rottweiller if a big dog is desired. You weren't too specific about your needs, or that of your fiance, much less about any preferences in size, temperament, etc. Kinda hard to be much help with so little to go on, sorry....HOPE I helped a little. Good luck with whatever you decide upon.

Honestly, it sounds like any dog would be fine. It just depends on your house and yard size. But then again as long as you walk them well every day they should be fine. Please adopt, there are so many GREAT dogs that need good homes at shelters. The fact that you are home all day now means you could even get a puppy because you have the time for it now and it will be well trained by the time it will be left alone. Just remember, a dog is a huge commitment: where will the dog go when you are out of town, can't go out to eat or whatever as much or for as long, vet bills, walks, training, etc. Good Luck and have fun.

Depends. Do you own your home or rent and will you be moving a lot in the future? Lots of places you might rent won't accept dogs, so if a lot of moving around is in your future, I'd wait till you are in a more settled place in your life.
Also it depends how much space you have in your home. Very small dogs don't work well with very small kids because little dogs can be fragile and easily injured by a rough toddler.
Dogs can live to be 10-15 years old. Think about what your life is going to look like for that time period and make your choice based on that.

Well you didn't say how big of dog you would like. For a smaller, 20-30 lbs, get a Beagle. They are very friendly and are great with children. They have that sad sack look with the long ears and big brown eyes.
If you want a little larger dog go for an APBT. The greatest family dog there is. They love everyone and are absolutely great with kids. When my daughter brings over my baby grandson she will put him on the floor and the Pit will go and lay down next to him. She lets him play with her ears while she licks his toes. She will do this for hours.

first, size doesn't always reflect the dogs energy level. that means that just because a dog is smaller, it may still need as much activity as a larger, working dog. don't just think about how the dog will fit your current lifestyle but how your lifestyle might change as you start working.
second, don't treat your dog like a person... its a dog. by treating the dog like a person you will just confuse the dog and it will be the cause of many problems/bad behaviors.
third, if you are keeping the dog inside the house/apartment make sure it is dogie proof. dogs will figure out how to open cabinet and will drink or eat almost anything they find. many emergencies are caused by dogs eating the wrong stuff they find around. even some plants can be dangerous.
have had several dogs i can tell you that they are worth the work. you should check out the pet section of Yahoo and read Cesar Millan articles about dogs. (http://pets.yahoo.com/blog/cesarmillan/) very informative and helpful.

You can take a short quiz at www.dogbreedinfo.com It will help you to determine which type of dog is best for your family. You will have to take into account what your family is going to be in the future. Be honest and realistic when answering the questions.
I used this quiz six years ago to find out what kind of dog would be best for my wife and I to get. We've had our toy fox terrier now since then. He is great in our apartment and is fantastic with our kids. He is a very small dog, but I got over not being able to get a St. Bernard.
You should wait until your fiance gets back and can help you pick out a dog, since it will be just as much his as yours.
Good luck with your search.

It depends. You have to think about the future too. You'll have this dog for about 10 to 15 years. Petfinder is a good place to start as well as local animal shelters. I will caution about the animal shelters. You don't know what the animal has been through or how it got there. I rescued one from the "pound" and she turned out to be an excellent dog. I went to the Humane Society and wound up getting a scavenger.
There are too many factors into getting an animal to consider for anyone of us to let you to get a certain type of dog.
Good luck on your search.

A lot of that depends on what you want in a dog. You are definitely around enough to get a puppy if you want one. Look on petfinder.com to see if you can find a dog that's right for you. Think about what you like- short hair or long? Big or small? A lapdog or an active one? Do you have space for a big dog? Are you OK with brushing a dog every day and paying for him to go to the groomer if he has long hair?
In general, though, it sounds like you have plenty of time to spend with and bond with a younger dog. I would get a dog who is known to be good with kids. There are lots of these, but my favorite are beagles. Since dogs can live 15 years or more, you are wise to consider whether they're good with kids! A lot of the small breeds, like Chihuahuas, can be too fragile for children, so be careful.
To find one, you could also have a look around your local pound and see if there are any cute dogs there you like. Good luck!!

I would suggest a Boxer. They have great energy and are loyal and affectionate. Great company while your fiancee is away. He'll love to play with the dog when he gets home. Let your fiancee know that we are all proud of him and all to keep Him in our prayers. Look up Boxer World on the internet. They will tell you everything you want to know about them. They are also very, very good with kids when u decide to have them. Also try looking up the AKC. Will tell you about all breeds. Good luck and I hope I've been helpful. Take Care!! :)

3 miles can b a lot for a little dog, get a medium sized dog, like a beagle or cockerspaniel. you should research ur fav breed and find out the ups/downs of each one. i.e: i have a cockerspaniel and they easily get ear infections. hes had one for the past few yrs now.
more important than the breed is the personality though. get a sweet energentic but calm dog. good luck :)
