Scripture compliments Scripture. To truly understand what God"s Word is saying you need, first, a really good study Bible. They are pricy, but it is worth the money. Second, you need to cross reference the Scripture you are reading and read many different passages on that topic. Third, a highlighter to highlight verses when the Lord speaks to you or when you are wowed over the awesomeness of God. I'm a big believer in note-taking in my bible, journaling my Christian walk,high-lighting, placing dates beside verses and what I learned. To me, I want my little boy or whoever gets my bible when I am gone to experience my journey and actually be able to see that my Faith was alive and real. We learn from God's Word, but we also learn from obedient lives of others. Fourth, you need a concordance for in-depth studying. Most importantly, I've discovered how important prayer is before you ever open your Bible so that the Lord will open your eyes to understand His Truths.

Going through an in depth study.

I use materials from Precept Ministries. Of all of the studies that I have done, I learn the most with this type of study. It is an inductive -in depth study where the students learn the truth for themselves.

There are Precept Studies all over the country and the world. You can contact Precept Ministries and see if there are any in your area, if not, maybe you can lead one. I have gone through the leader training and have been teaching classes for several years now.
Their web site is:

email me if I can help you with any other Bible study questions
I hope you get a chance to take classes with Precept materials, they are so wonderful, you won't regret it.

Reading a concordance along with the Bible helps as well as using a daily devotional to learn how to apply the Bible's teaching to your life.

The desire to learn it. In the past I would just read it for so many chapters, but now I read it to be able to answer for my faith. I would just read it to hear from G-d and not study it. Now I do both to here from G-d and study in depth. Now thank G-d I have learned a lot.

The Holy Spirit gives us interpretation of Gods word. I pray for wisdom, and revelation before I begin studying the bible, and am amazed by what the Spirit of God reveals! From a logical standpoint you need to run Gods word by 3 different meters; 1. what did it mean in context to the time it was written; 2. what did it mean throughout the whole bible; and 3. How can I apply it to my life today. If you do this you will be amazed at what god is saying to the church today. It can be a timely process, but trust me it will absolutely change how you interpret what God is saying. God bless you!, and don't forget to make today great!

Asimov's Guide to the Bible helped me a lot. Although there are a lot of scholarly tomes about various biblical topics, such as authorship, time frame, translations, etc., Asimov provides a good condensation of the general consensus among biblical scholars in a book-by-book overview of the Bible.

To be honest, you will need to understand what you are reading. If you don't fully comprehend what you just read, re-read it until you do. You are basically breaking it down piece by piece. This will take you a long time to read the bible but it is the most rewarding. Make notes as well!!

To read the other passages that relate to it. A lot of Bible's will point out a reference in which a particular verse is talking about.

First prayer to God for Him to help me to understand. Then when I read I question who, what, where, why and when. I look at cross references from the OT when I am reading the NT. And I like to use a concordance and several different versions of the Word. I like to place my spirit there in the context of the story.

When I read the story of Joseph and his brothers who betrayed him as if I was there, I became very emotional and hurt for him. This is a parallel story of Jesus' birth, betrayal, and revelation to His people the Jews (I'm not saying that the Jews killed Jesus. I know that God sacrificed Him and He willfully gave up His life).
