pit bulls and any bully breed.

It doesn't matter the breed go to the nearest adoption and they will not lie to you like a breeder. They want the best for each pet.

English bull dogs easily knock everyone over with their lard A s s clumisiness.

Golden retrievers really don't like their hair pulled or stuck under the shoe of a kid screeming over the top of them.

Its not breed specific. People are telling you what works for them. Go find one that works for you. Find a dog about 6-9 months. Altered and set on all shots at a rescue. Its personality should be set. With a puppy you still really don't know what you may get.

The one of mine I got as a senior dog is strangely the best with children but can't handle the torment they put her through., She likes gentle lovins.

Great advice thankyou for supporting the established pet.

And to all the shits and chis can be nasty snippers. But they do have little mouths so you hope it doesn't hurt hte kids much.

Beagle are usually pretty good so are most any hounds that are rampant in rescue and in shelters. We do rescue a lot and send them off with kids.

I would say Golden Retriever but then I'm biased... I have two.

JR has given the best advise. Go to your local shelter/rescue and see what you find. Dogs are special creatures and the breed doesn't necessarily mean a lot when it comes to which one will make the best pet. It's all in how they are raised. If you give them love and affection you will receive 10 fold on your investment.

I would read up on the different breeds though just to get an idea on what traits are most prevalent for each.

However, no matter what breed you end up with if you don't invest the time to train them properly it doesn't matter what breed you get... you will have problems.

A gentle hand and lots of love and affection will make all the difference in the world.

Incidentally... my two love kids. Every time my boy see little kids he gets so excited he's beside himself.

Another shameless plug for Golden's.

I agree with the person who put pit bully or any bully breed. If you want a smaller dog you can look into English Staffordshire Terriers. I have a pit bull and love him so much. He absolutely loves people. Unfortunately, irresponsible and cruel owners have given these dogs a bad rap and some states have breed restrictions, so check out the rules in your town before considering one. I also have a little Scottish Terrier that is great with kids (and bosses around my pit bull). But what ever you decide do some in depth research. Every family is different as well as every dog. Good luck!

I have had labs and lab mixes my whole life and whilst labs are lovely dogs they are not the best guard dogs. If it is a choice between a rottie and a lab then I would suggest getting a rottie. They will do a good job of guarding your house and when raised responsibly are great with children. You should look into mastiffs, as suggested by another poster. They are brilliant guard dogs who will pin down intruders and just wait for their owners to get home (less likely to result in a lawsuit). The dog I have now is a lab rottie cross, and has inherited the rotties guarding instincts. I have come across this mix quite often here in the UK, and if you see one near you it could be a good compromise. Why not have a look in your local rescue centers, you may find the perfect dog for you there.

ok depends on age of kid.. no dog is good for kids under 4 yrs becuase the kids send conflicting messages that can be misinterpreted by a dog.. plus you will be too busy with the kids to look after a dog (especially a pup) properly

Golden Retreivers are generally considered one of the most patient with kids..

Shih Tzus are also ok - but probably not if kids are under 8 (they can hurt the pup inadvertantly even by dropping it accidentally)

avoid intelligent breeds like Border Collies
avoid Terriers - they were bred to hunt and kill so are mouth agressive and will destroy toys and fingers.

really if you said the age of the kids people could help more...

go to your local SPCA or shelter and ask to see the dogs that have been around kids and are safe with them...

consider an adult - too easy to confuse a pup

For a smaller dog I would go for a Beagle. They are really great with kids and everyone. The are so cute with that sad sack look, the long ears and big brown eyes.
For a little bigger dog get an APBT. They are the greatest family dog these, bar none. They are great with kids, even baby's. My daughter brings over my baby grandson and will lay him on the floor. The Pit goes over to lay down next to him. She lets him play with her ears while she lick his toes. She will do this for hours.

we have 2 beagles. Santa is a cocerspaniel/beagle and Mandy is a Beagle /jound. Wonderful pets....but they are for the family with myself/husband as there keepers. Children need to be supervisied at all times. Good Luck and becareful. I1 thing we did was make sure the dog is small than your child so if they do attack the child has a chance to get the dog off hopefully.

I heard that Golden Retrievers are great as family pets, but its all up to the dog. Its not about the breed, its mostly about the dogs personality.

My parents had a collie when I was very young and they said it was the best family dog they had. It was very gentle with us kids and very protective when strangers came around. It might be something that you should talk to a vet about. They could give you more of an idea on which dogs have the best personalities, exspecailly with children.

Well, check with the local aimal shelter. AND -- it works both ways-- you kids are responsible for treating that dog with love, patience and understanding AND training it properly (plenty of good books and great info, even on the Internet) -- becuz that dog needs to look up to YOU as its Alpha-leader of the pack, from the time it is a puppy and all thru its life.

Best wishes and best of luck- hope you get a nice dog that loves you and is loved back for a loong loong time!!
