At least 2 basic concepts of god worship (having lots of babies, hatred of outsiders) seem designed to pass down genetic material. Could this be evolution at work?

you have to look at it in the context of the times:

- high infant death rate and early age of death in primitive times
- many tribes competing for scarce resources

Most likely. Even in the bible and quran it says to kill those that do not want (their) god to be king. In fact it is almost word-for-word in Luke 19:27-8 for xtianity and in Sura 8:12-3 for islam. You could take a closer look at the individual family. Take monogamy and fidelity for example. Those traits are repeated.

You have no understanding of religion at all. First of all, religion does NOT teach "hatred of outsiders", it just happens that every religion has some members who personally follow that. As for having lots of babies- that's because children are seen as a gift from God and so more people will be raised in their family's religion. Shame on you for trying to reduce religion to nothing more than a product of your silly evolution theory.

The book is an attempt for an author to make money.

It just does this by mis-representing Religion.

If all of the free thinkers spent as much time reading pro-Religious material as they did anti-Religious material, they could really be called free thinkers.

Most do not.

Peace!

Of course. If it wasn't adaptive in some way (what you suggest seems plausible) we wouldn't see such seemingly strange behavior in a sentient primate species.

Recent studies in molecular genetics suggests that there may be a complex of genes that imbues religiousity (the "god gene"). If this is verified by continuing research, we should eventually be able to trace just when in our history this evolved.

unfettered procreation and xenophobia (tribalism) are both competitive advantages. They weren't created by a god, or in conjunction with man's creation of a god. They are competitive advantages in all species that practice them.

moving beyond the god figure is evolution.

I don't see how evolution can generate principles, like this or morals. You don't see it with animals.
