I have been unemployed for three years. I am running out of money and are just plain desparate. I have decided I am going to lie to get a job. I have set up an virtual receptionist to act as my telephone contact for a "fake employer" I have friends who will act as professional references and boss. I have worked with them for hours in role playing excercises and feel like it may work.
I have nothing to lose. If they find out it is all a fraud and do not hire me or fire me after finding out, I will be in the same position as I am today.
Have you ever lied to get a job? What do you think?

I am working now as a temp but it is only on an occasional basis. There is no future in any of the menial temp jobs that are so boring.
I think I can fool the background checking agencies with my "virtual company"

There must be a less elaborate way for you to find a job. Background checks are becoming more thorough and if you were found out, it may make you even less employable.

I wouldn't go that far. Too easy to mess it up and lose a job. I understand the temptation I don't have any references because the last 4 companies have gone out of business and it has been so long that I don't have contract information for anyone. If I lost my job I would retire or if I needed work just tell them I didn't have any. I would fill the 3 year gap with saying you were doing temp work or tried to start a business that didn't work out, you had to be doing something.

I guess you could lie, as long as your potential employer doesn't conduct background checks. If they do, you'd likely be busted since your company wouldn't appear anywhere in the checks. I, personally, wouldn't lie to get a job but that's a decision for each individual to make. With most companies doing background checks, it's becoming more and more difficult for anyone to get by with it anyway.

Um... well... I just looked at your profile and, according to one of your questions, you had a job 3 months ago. Question in question:

0 I get so restless at work, is it ADHD?
I cant stand it at work. I get so tired sitting at a desk all day looking at the same four walls day after day. I want to get up and walk around but that is a no no at my office.

Anyone else get super restless sitting at a desk all day? I do have enough work so that is not the issue.

If you were a boss and needed to hire an employee, would you hire a person who did what you are planning to do?

Build your leadership qualities by being a Great Follower. People notice your attitude and leadership qualities, no matter what you are doing now. If you are a janitor, be the best janitor around; if you are a painter, be the best painter that your employers have had.

Your turn will come to be noticed and promoted.

Trust me.

Oh my! You should be applying for stage production jobs! This is a rather severe way to get a job and surely you will be found out. Perhaps you are looking at the wrong types of jobs - expand your search and even lower your expectations & demands and you might really find a job. Good luck.

No, I wouldn't do it.

In your case, why would it make a difference? Do you have a poor work history or poor references that are turning off potential employers? If not, and your history and references are solid then why would it make a difference?

As long as the lie didn't effect the job later so I maybe fired, then sure I'd lie!
