Many doctors do this, they charge simply because they can. Some of them charge because they feel they are losing money by you going somewhere else but it could simply be because you want a copy for yourself.

In the medical practice that I work in we do not, however our local hospital charges if you taking the copies for yourself as opposed to having them sent directly to another doctor or hospital.

Due to the increased cost of operation, some doctors will charge a small fee for copying medical records. My advice, since I have had to do this for both myself and husband, is periodically(if you go to the dr alot),request records from the date of_____to_____. then keep them updated without getting the tamale. You can always send copies of dates that are pertinent to the requestor, Keep Your copy from doc as original in YOUR file.

Yes. Doctors are entitled to recover the costs of providing you with the records. This includes the cost of time spent by their staff in locating and photocopying the records and for the actualy cost of the photocopying.

Some doctors may choose not to charge for this as a personal favour to you, but they are entitled to charge. It isn't a "cash grab " or because they don't want you to have them, it is simply covering the actual cost of providing them to you.

HIPAA requires health care providers, health plans, and health care clearinghouse to allow you access to your medical records. Notices you receive from providers and plans must include information about how you can obtain copies of your medical records.

They can charge for certain reasons.

MEDICAL RECORDS BELONG TO THE DOCTOR AND YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO PAY FOR COPIES, THE ONLY EXCEPTION BEING IF A DOCTOR LEAVES HIS PRACTICE AND THEN HE MUST GIVE THEM TO YOU.
