According to family history, my maternal grandmother's father was one of 2 brothers who survived a shipwreck and washed ashore to the beach of a village called Kuala Penyu in Sabah, East Malaysia. They stayed on and married the locals. My grandmother's father was called Laksamana and they say he was a pirate. This happened about or more than 100 years ago. Can anyone shed light on what exactly he was? Rather dubious. In the Malay archipelago, Laksamana is an admiral. What does Laksamana means in the Phillipines? Or is it just a name? Thanks

Well, this will not shed much light, but Francisco Laksamana (1877 - 1966) wrote a book on the Filipino society during the last decade of the nineteenth century, "Anino Ng Kahapon", published by Ateneo Press.
Don't forget that Filipino languages are based on Malay languages.
Sorry, can't be of more help.
