In my opinion in this present trend of coalliation Govts the President of India should no longer remain the mere figurehead that he is and should be given many more constitutional powers than he has at present, say something on the model of the US President. To give some kind of a moral authority to this increase of functions by the President it is essential that the President is elected directly by the People of India rather than by only the MP's and MLA's.

President of India is a post from which people of India cannot expect much and it was only after Dr Kalam's presidency that people of India recognizes this post with high value standards and are developing a political view.
Now at this point of time, I think and feel India should change to a Presidential Democracy like USA - this is the only way it can function in India and it would make a higher sense as like in all other Presidential Democracies - people of India would have ONE person to blame for failures or successes. Right now, there are lot of factors through which people of India cannot blame or even find the real problem or cannot even judge between two governments.
We do not need 2 Parliaments - we just need one (1) Parliament and a President ruling the government - only then we will start having people like Kalam becoming in charge of the highest post which maximizes output and performance of the government.
A very example right now is if you vote for BJP you do not know who will become the next Prime Minster ! and that is the problem. If there were Presidents - you know before you go to vote and the rivalry between two Presidential candidates would only result in betterment of India.
Otherwise, whoever is the President of India - all they can do is motivate kids and function according to the constitution. Thats about it.

Citizens of India should allowed to vote directly for the President and Vice President as any middleman would look for their own interest which is the case with political parties on date.
