Is it possible to become lactose intolerant at age 13? Im 13 years old and for a while my stomach hasn't been feeling right and my friend brought up that I might be lactose intolerant like her. It runs in my family too I think, as my uncle is lactose intolerant. Is it possible to just develop an allergy to milk after being an infant?? Like not having it when you are an infant but developing it afterwards??

Yes, it's absolutely possible. Were you breastfed or bottlefed? Have you had much dairy in your life before now? Going through adolescence/puberty changes one's body chemistry and allergies that were heretofore not present can most definitely emerge. They did in me.

We're the only animals that drink milk as adults! Really, our lactase supply (the enzyme that breaks down lactose) should dry up once we finish breast-feeding. I have been lactose intolerant since puberty or probably before that. I've never really been okay with milk. Try cutting milk/cheese out of your diet and see what happens. You can also try lactose pills (available at the drug store, take them WITH your dairy). Another common intestinal thing is a gluten intolerance. Causes a lot of the same problems as dairy and often goes hand in hand with dairy intolerance. Look up "guten intolerance" on the web if you still have problems. Good luck!

When you are lactose intolerant, you are lacking in a particular enzyme known as lactase that is responsible for breaking down lactose in your digestive system. It is possible that you only find out that you are lactose intolerant after so many years. Sometimes the symptoms are mild and you may not have attributed them to the milk products that you are consuming.

I am! I've just been waiting for someone to ask. I haven't tried the supplement. I did find Lactaid ice cream and it was good, but I can't find it anywhere anymore.

It is possible. Try avoiding dairy products for a week and see if you feel better. If you don't feel better, it must be something else.
