My son is in the Coast Guard and my husband was career Air Force. Comparing the two, I can say without a doubt, the Coast Guard has some benefits over the other branches. As a smaller group, individuals have more say in their assignments. This can be a huge perk. During tech school (which he finished last month), *he* chose his next assignment location. Everyone in the class was ranked by points (earned by testing results, inspections, volunteering, etc.). Sure, he had to work hard for that privilege, but no way my husband ever had that choice in his 20+ years (he could only put in a wish list and hope for the best). CG seem to have a little more control in their career as well; my son chose his career field vs being put into one. When my son enlisted, there was a waiting list (1-1/2 yr ago). As I understand it, the CG isn't desperate for folks, so they might be a little more selective.
Good luck.

The Coast Guard is no longer part of the Department of Transportation. It is part of the Department of Homeland Security, now.
It is a great way to serve. I suggest you get yourself into shape beforehand by doing some running and calisthenics. It is good to be a strong swimmer, too. These steps will save you a lot of difficulty during training.
I included a couple of links for you including the Coast Guard Academy if you are interested in being a officer.

ok - look at it this manner: Get a map of the U. S.. placed a finger on the place you reside. discover the farthest place away interior the decrease 40 8 states which you will discover - and placed your finger there. evaluate this threat: he's getting stationed stunning the place your finger is placed. he's on a cutter, and you the two stay in an exquisite little house on the city. 3 weeks upon getting there, he gets deployed for 3 months... and there you take a seat. all on my own. No pals. as far as achievable away out of your loved ones. Oh - and now you come across out which you're previous due... and the motor vehicle tire in basic terms went flat... and your Uncle Ernie in basic terms kicked the bucket... and a few bill collector is looking invariably for some cost that your hubby supposedly made and isn't any longer identifying to purchase - and you will no longer have the skill to realize your hubby till he returns in 2 a million/2 months. The question I would desire to respond to is: are you able to handle this state of affairs? What do you do? in case you wait to get married, and spend it sluggish residing removed from homestead formerly, you will earnings the two adulthood and the adventure to have the skill to make existence much less annoying for your self in case you're in a crappy concern like the only I defined. Then, shall we are saying the different ingredient: You hubby takes to the air for a three month deployment - and leaves you at homestead, all on my own. He gets a notification from the unit ombudsman (companion-help-team liaison) and reveals out your pregnant. Then he gets notified the the motor vehicle is broke. Then he reveals out that there are magnificent charges and which you're no longer conserving up ok. Then the Captain includes the team and says that the three month cruise has been prolonged for no less than yet another 2 months - possibly extra. What impression do you think of this would have on HIS overall performance? With all the outdoors stress, it stands to reason that he would ok finally end up in problem... and what would THAT do on your funds and your relationship? this would be a needed selection which you'll be making. evaluate each and every little thing, no longer in basic terms falling back on, "yet we are in LOVE!" stable success.

they won't let you in unless you're over six feet tall....must be that tall so you can wade ashore if the boat sinks. Join the REAL Navy.
