I suppose you meant to ask the question, "Why do we people - people all the way from Athiests to born-again Christians - need someone like Jesus to save ourselves from being dead forever?" I am a Christian, but let me answer that with something that is not necessarily "Christian".
When you die, we don't know what's on the other side of death. We don't have concrete, scientifically verifiable proof of a Heaven (Christian), or a Hell (Christian), or an Elysian Fields (Greek idea), or some wonderful planet circling a special star (Mormon), or anything else that happens "after death". All we have is what we have been "told" by others.
Christianity tells us that we can't "save ourselves" because we are inherintly "sinful" - meaning we have nothing within ourselves that, in and of itself, is agreeable to God. If it was "agreeable" to God then He would grant us the privilege to take part in the afterlife He designed - Heaven.
So if we can't, of ourselves, become agreeable to God, then how do we do it? According to what's in the Bible - both Old and New Testament - the only way to become "agreeable" to God is to ask Him to forgive us of all that we've done wrong, and then ask (or allow) Jesus to become the leader of our lives - from this point on.
Now, when God looks at us to see if we're "worthy" of being saved, He doesn't see what we've done; He sees, instead, what Jesus has done. Then we really are allowed into Heaven.
I said all of this because this is what I believe with all of my heart. Others will disagree, but this is what I believe.

Good morning Gilbert,
"Why can't we save ourselves?" you ask. I'm sure you probably mean from hell or damnation or something like that. You should know that we atheists don't believe in that so it's really a moot point. However, if you are referring to global warming or a cosmic collision, I can give an answer. I have heard of the idea to set-off a couple of volcanoes, which will release their dark clouds of smoke (hopefully not too much harmful gas) and thus lowering the earth's tempertaure a few degrees by blocking out some of the sun's rays. There are draw-backs to this plan such as, decrease in crop production, and loss of power to solar powered equipment. But if we prepare ahead of time for that, it might be worth the risks. As far as a collision with an asteroid or comet, unless they can divert it, the earth would be screwed. So, it would be in our best interest to begin colonizing other planets as soon as possible. But, I highly doubt NASA's up to that yet. Cheers

I am content to accept reality as it is. I don't feel the need to invent phony ways that I might get saved.

We have no power. The penalty of sin is death and we have no life to give ourselves. Only God does...through Jesus.

Saving from what?
I've saved myself from becoming obese by not eating too much chocolate yesterday. Does that count? :)
