It is kind of like this: God created us, we messed up big time, in the Old Testament God required sacrfices and all the time for our sins and finally He took pity on us, sent Jesus to die for us. Now think about this, when Jesus died, he felt the pain of the sins of all mankind, He took our sins upon Him, just how painful do you think that was ? Ray Boltz has a song you can probably hear on amazon.com called "do you still feel the pain" and it says "Jesus, do you still feel the nails, every time we fail" have you ever thought about that, that every time you sin and we all do all day long, do you think Jesus still feels the pain every time we fail ???/ He loves us so so so much.

This world seems to have been created to separate the good and bad. In the spirit world Satan had already rebelled. If you notice in Genesis, one of the first thing God did was separate light from darkness. The ultimate separation will be when Satan and his followers are cast into outer darkness, but the children of God will not have need of a sun because God is the light. But in that separation process we all find ourselves in darkness. In the Gospel of John it states that in Jesus was life and the life was the light of men. So coming to Jesus brings us back to the light, but even a single one of our sins would still cast us into hell because God can not look on sin. There had to be a sacrifice so that its innocent blood could cover our sins. That sacrifice was Jesus dying on the cross. Think of the pain in God and Jesus. At the pain Jesus experienced and the fact that there was separation between two parts of the God head for the first and only time ever. I know that at the cross every sin of the world was piled on Jesus and by the resurrection he had none of them. This all took love on a plane higher than is humanly possible. And He did this to give us a way to God. Hope this answers your question.

I agree with the first poster in that the cross is only the beginning of His evidenced of love for us. Often we are tempted to end the story at the cross. It is not solely that Jesus took on a death penalty for our sins, but the real blessing is by the example of His rising. Jesus did not end at death, but arose so that we could have evidence that there is life available after what we, as people, typically see as the end.
All sin -or disconnection from God- has penalty. Jesus succumbed to the Father's desire that we all should be free from the penalties we would otherwise face. We know that God is loving and compassionate, full of mercy and grace - what better way to evidence this love, compassion, mercy and grace than by sending an extension of yourself to live as your creation -experiencing life on earth as your own creation? Denying yourself the freedom to "end the world" so that those who seek and believe upon you would be free - it's a concept that isn't readily understood.
What so many non-believers (and believers alike) don't seem to realize is that it doesn't stop at the death of Jesus. If we continue to read on in scripture from John 3:15, we will see that God sent is Son into the world NOT to condemn it, but to save it so that we may have everlasting life. And not life filled with hardship and strife, but life filled with real joy.

I have wondered this myself. Christ dying on the cross is supposed to be the greatest sacrifice of all time. I think many mere human beings have sacrificed as much and more. And many have suffered far more horrible deaths for much longer periods of time. Yet his sacrifice is supposed to benefit us somehow while the suffering of countless other does nothing for us in the spiritual sense.
I genuinely do not understand how somebody being executed 2000 years ago is supposed to cleanse my sins today. And I would like to.

Because god is really the devil. He just loves to see men all fighting with each other for the "honor" of being slung up on the cross. Its called the seperation work. The cross will draw these @rse-holes.

Because that is His all....His only Son. He will not force us to love and serve Him. Jesus died the death for us because the penalty for sin IS death. A created being could not have taken our punishment as it would not have been enough. But for Jesus to take on our humanity and die for us was the ultimate answer. There is nothing bigger God could have done to show us His love.

He left heaven to go on the cross for us.
People get mad at you they do not talk to you for the rest of their lives.

It is only the beginning------he intercesses for us day and night. He has made an eternal mansion for us. His love endures forever.

Couldn't he show us he loves us by actually doing something useful, like stopping people who like to rape and torture children, for example? A god who supposedly loves us but does nothing for us is worthless.
