When I first read it, my thoughts were similar to those of Brett, and I honestly still agree. I'm not really sure why we would cease to be the best humans we can be simply because we're spiritual beings, as the majority of our perceptions lie in the physical world.
Of course, I realized at that point that some people use their "spirituality" to avoid their humanity. They try to reject everything about the human experience, stubbornly insisting that there is a spiritual side to which they must cater, a seed that they must encourage to grow.
This makes no sense to me. If we are spiritual beings, I would think there is a point to our being here in physical form, so we should do our best to understand and live this material life. I would also think that our spirituality would not be something to which we must tend, but something we could find if we searched. If we are spiritual beings having a human experience, we are primarily spiritual, so why would that aspect of us be in a stage of infancy?
I can understand how some people spend much of their time searching for this so-called spirituality that they vaguely define as "not physical" without any understanding of what it may really be, but it is not acceptable to shrug everything and everyone else off as unworthy of the same - indeed, MORE - attention. I think religion (just one example), with all its services and traditions and motions, not only interferes with a legitimate discovery of spirituality (if it exists), but can easily interfere with the human aspect of our existence.

Carychrystler's response was excellent. I would add that your quote implies we are spiritual beings experiencing something we are not (human), and so trying to be the best at something that we are not seems to miss the point of what we are. It's not a matter of dismissing 'our' humanity in favor of our spiritual selves, it's a matter of recognizing that the human experience is an experience only, an experience spirit is having, not part of our being.
As such, the human is an expression and not an expresser. As an expression, it is already doing the only thing it can, and perceptions as to makes it a "best" human, as opposed to a worst human, is just part of the expression and has no meaning to the spiritual Essence of your Being.

Hi!
Who are we? We are the lifeforces that animate these organic forms. It is inevitable that while we over identify with the organism, we will forgot at times who and who's we are. Indeed, most only catch fleeting glimpses. Still, there is some long term benefit of being in a condition that can give rise to such thoughts / feelings as "I am hungry"; "I am cold" etc. In meeting need, our own and that of others as they in turn meet our own, we have access to a vital cosmic insight that could not otherwise be ours.
The balance exists between being the best human and the best spirit we can attain.
Good wishes.

This is what I call the Great Dichotomy. It is ego's way of "allowing" us to seek without actually finding. On one hand, we have our spiritual beliefs, but insist upon physical reality as...well, reality. Our true (spiritual) nature is given a glance, as we light candles, attend services read the books...while never finding.
You see it in your question: ..."aspire to be the best humans..." I'm not knocking you, just see where the focus is: "human".
We make divisions where there are none. "Human" is ego, keeping us from discovering who and what we are, beneath the world that ego made. But as long as we keep this dichotomy, we will allow ego its head. "Human" is a projection, Spirit is the reality. This does not mean human is "bad", just a play, an act, as a child with a vivid imagination, creating worlds as he/she sits in the sunlight, playing with the dust floating by...

We are NOT "Spiritual beings having a human experience."
But we MUST aspire to be the best humans we can be!
( What the Hell does 'spirituality' have to do with aspiring to being the *best* people we can be? ... This is a HUMAN issue - a PEOPLE issue, whether one is spiritual or NOT! )

I agree.......It would help if humanity began to live like souls who have persons instead of like persons that have souls or like persons without souls.
