One of the best tips I can give you is to talk to a lot of fisherman. Anytime your out on the water or near. The more you talk to them the more info you will absorb. Read a lot of magazines. They are full of information that is very useable. And most of all EXPERIMENT ! Most of the fun of fishing is the fact your outside enjoying the peace. If you figure out you want to fish for a specific species you can join a fishing club. They are a great way to learn about fishing.

hi, depends on what kinda fishing your starting off, either sea or coarse.. the two are different, with salt water fish they don't get spooked as a fresh water fish, I suggest if your freshwater fishing & you are buying (or brought) a starter rod, reel etc I would make sure you've got the right line & size hooks, usually on a starter kit the rod & reel will be fine for a begginer but the line might be to heavy & hooks being too big, this is when the fish would get spooked easily & you have less chance off catching any fish! I'm more into my coarse fishing, when I started off many years ago I couldn't believe when I saw the size of hooks & line which was catching me fish, using a size 18 hook & 3.5LB line using maggots as bait, starting off small, now I'm into my carp fishing were everything is bigger using different baits size hooks etc. I suggest you type ' fishing for beginners' into the google search search bar & take a look what comes up! alot of helpful tips! : )
The no.1 tip is patience tho ; ) & then the correct set up & bait!!
Good Luck & tight lines!

The bottom line is......you gotta get your hook wet.
The majority of beginning fishermen, and women, will pick a method and try it for about 15 minutes before deciding to try another method, or that there are no fish biting. Impatience, is the main reason most people ( beginners and experienced alike ) don't catch fish. There are other reasons, but this is the main one. The idea is that if your hook isn't in the water, you have NO chance of catching any fish.

It really depends on the type of fishing you plan on doing, but I would suggest buying a spincast reel on a regular pole. This is the easiest pole/reel to use. Get a bobber, a bobber stopper, a weight, and a hook. You can check online as to how to get everything on your line properly. I would suggest using worms... you can buy them or dig them up after a good rain. Bobber fishing, often called stillfishing, is considered one of the most basic types of fishing. As you get more comfortable with that type of fishing, you can progress to fishing with a spinning rod and then with a baitcaster. Good luck and catch the big one!

The best answer I can give you is to go to your local tackle shop and talk to the owners operators. Not the idiots at WalMart.
In most cases they are more than happy to help you get started, and give you good advise. It's to their benefit. They want to make customers happy and have you come back for future purchases.

Sammy your Q is very vague. We need to know what kinda fishing you are interested in. Saltwater or Freshwater? Offshore salt/Inshore salt? Freshwater "bait-fishing" or Freshwater "lure-fishing"? And of course, what species of fish?
For a general guidline check my "starred" question's on my profile.
