They are issued by different bank consortiums. At one time it was a major difference, where each card was accepted - some vendors would take MasterCard but not Visa, and vice-versa.

That's no longer the case - most any vendor who takes one takes the other. The more limited cards are Disover and American Express.

They are two different companies, but they are pretty much equivalent.

Different issuers of either card can have very different terms though.
