Please don't make assumptions, my brother and sister are both atheists and I love them and respect them both. I have also had friends that are atheists...

I've met and correspond regularly with three Christians from this board -- Suzanne, Primo, and Mama24.

We don't discuss religion, often, as we each know how the other feels. It's not about changing viewpoints, in my opinion, through email. Primo and I are playing fantasy football together, Mama24 and I always discuss music, and Suzanne and I talk about whatevah.

There are obnoxious jerks on all sides of any issue. I find it ironic that the extreme christians and the extreme atheists tend to act very similar even though they are the ones proclaiming the hardest how better t hey are then the other. Being mormon I see both sides. I get the extreme christians telling me I am in a cult and going to hell and am not a christian, blah blah and then extreme atheists sometimes say the same thing with the additional you are brainwashed, have no education, moron, blah blah blah I think most people have their own views and beliefs, many are very strong and opinionated about them, but dont stoop to being obnoxious jerks. If a christian or an atheist is being over the top rude or obnoxious in their answer or question I will call them on it if I see it.

I have atheist friends, Jewish friends, Buddhist friends, etc.

I would hope that people who are atheists would not turn away from me or decide not to be my friend just because I am a Christian.
Sadly, though, this may be the case. I read on this board last night where one lady said that Christians had been unkind or whatever to her family in the past, so it's therapeutic now for her to bash them/make fun of them/verbally attack them, or whatever. That's sad to me . Hopefully, she is in the minority, though.

Good question, thanks for bringing it up.

Want to learn a surprising fact? I've never met an atheist who claims to have only atheists for friends. Every one of them I've spoken to has theist friends. Now I have spoken with some Christians who wouldn't have an atheist friend... but that's a different question.

Ostracised? Not at all! I would not normally have a Christian for a friend because I'd probably have nothing in common with them.

I have had a long-term relationship with someone who declared herself religious. I talked her out of it in a few months. Education is the key.

Since America is mainstream Christianity (or other religious belief) it stands to reason that some of your friends will be religious.
Alert: All religions are not Christian

I have a number of friends of different faiths: Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, etc. Unless we are specifically talking about religion, we stay away from the topic and everything is just fine.

Yes, one of my dearest friends is a Christian - goes to church out of choice, prays, the whole deal.

Within our little group, no one really cares what religion or non-religion the others are; we just enjoy each others' company.

I'm an atheist and I have Christian and Buddhist friends and our friendship has absolutely nothing to do with their religion.
