If its catered, I would say that it would be a little awkward. If its more of a pot-luck style, then go for it.
You could always play dumb and say you thought it was pot-luck if it is an issue.

Oh heck no it isn't rude to bring a salad and fruits. It is a nice change of eating choices at a picnic. And that is exactly what a picnic is...you have a variety of food laid out so you can choose. You don't have to have fried chicken everytime you go to a picnic. And a party isn't a party without fruits and veggies. Live life in the fast lane change it up sometime. You never know you might start something good. Get more people to think healthy. :)

Oh heck no. For starters, the vast majority of people will understand if you are on a special diet and they'll be happy that you attended, even though they weren't serving any food that fits the bill for you. Secondly, I can't think of anyone who would be upset with someone who brings salad and fruit with plenty to share with others. If you're at all concerned about it, simply talk to the host of the picnic/party beforehand and explain the situation. I'm betting you won't have any problem 99% of the time or better.

I actually am on a diet where I cannot eat certain foods and I often bring my own food or eat before I go. I find that if I bring a dish and it ends up being the only dish that I can eat...it ends up being gone before I even get a taste of it! I don`t think anyone would complain if you brought your own food for medical reasons. If you do bring some to share, make sure to bring A LOT of it!

No not at all. Like you said you brought enough for several people and aren't being a pain in the butt about it. Just be sure to call ahead and tell the host or hostess what you're bringing so they aren't overloaded on food. Nobody wants 50 tons of salad to swim in.

No way! It's perfectly fine to bring your own stuff to the picnic. If people have a problem with it, forget them. You brought enough for others, and it's for medical reasons.

No way! I actually think that's a really good idea, because there's probably at least one or two other people there who prefer to eat healthier foods, or at least want a choice. It breaks up the monotony of meat, finger foods, chips, etc.

Not at all. It's nice that you bring some to share. But, there's no reason for you to go hungry.
