I would have to bend the rule and teach my child a couple of things;
1. At the end of the day, it is what it is. Make the best of it and think about consequences before you take action.
2. Be respectful, it takes you so far in life. It's all up to you and the way you go about doing things.
3. Have faith and know that God may not come when you call but He's always on time.

There are many things you should teach your child, but in my opinion, I believe the one thing that is most important is to have manners.

When a child grows up into an adult and has respect for others, it will make him/her a better person. More people will you return the attitude than if there were no manners. Of course there will be the few who no matter what will not return it, they will be nasty no matter how nice and polite you are to them. But maintain it, it will come back as a reward.

RESPECT - For others, for yourself, and for your spiritual guide. All things begin and end with respect; a respectful handshake when you meet someone, and a respectful wave of the hand as you depart.

It goes without saying that respect is one of the most common desires amongst humans. How many times have you heard someone say cry "I don't get no respect!"? Without respect, a person can become cynical, depressed, and withdrawn. With it, we're happy, satisfied, and ready to greet the day.

I feel that children are mostly influenced by respect, especially when they see it mutually shared from person to person. It breeds generosity and good manners. A child can be taught early to smile and greet their teacher, or neighbor, or any other adult as "Hello Mr. So-and-So, it's good to see you today!" Sure, it might sound cheesy, but isn't it better than some things you hear from kids today?

All kids need to learn to respect themselves. Their body is theirs alone, and they should take care of it, and no one else has the right to misuse it.

Lastly, respect their spiritual guide, whoever or whatever it may be. He/She/It might be a god, a goddess, or a spirtitual being that the family follows.

This question is tough, for there many things that a child MUST learn; so which is the most important? I think they all tie in eventually; respect, trust, faith, generosity, forgiveness, and many more.

Hello, Grace!

Thas's a good question. I think there is one thing you may teach a child which can be the foundation of all other things that can be built on in a child's life, is the fear of God. The fear of God will help even the child to listen and obey you when you teach or advice him/her on anything as a parent. Thank you!

If I could teach my child one thing it would be to always be open minded about life. The reason I would teach him this is because in any given situation there is always something that is cause or will the effect, and understanding this he will be mindful when making decisions.

I try 2 teach my little boy as much as I can about the world... simple things like dont hit, sit down and eat, eat healthy, please and thank you, he's only 2 and he already says thank you. I would say 1 important thing toteach a child is honesty. Being honest will get you so far in life. When they grow up they will be honest with their spouses and honest with you (could come in handy)... But id have to say the most important thing would have to be how to survive in the world. If you teach them that it would be priceless. Less heartbreaks, less failures, So my goal is to raise a strong minded, indepentdent child.

Respect. Because with respect comes many other things. If you have respect for both yourself and others then you will treat people decently and be honest etc. I think thats the main things most young people are not learning today is respect. Not just respect for other people but also respect for themselves. So many young people have low self esteem and except abuse etc from others when they dont have to. I think respect would be the ONE thing I would teach my child and you cant just teach a child about respect you have to model it for them as well. If the parent doesnt respect themselves or others then they can expect to raise a child who is going to respect anyone either.

I would teach her proper communication. This ties in with respect and manners.

I believe if she knows how to communicate properly, which includes listening, she can find her way through life a lot smoother.

Everyday she will have to communicate with others regarding relationships, problems, and life in general. If she knows how to do that she will have many friends, resolve any problem she encounters, and grow up to be a happy healthy woman.

I have been shy most of my life and have not communicating with very many people. This has caused a lot of problems including not having friends, not being able to talk to teachers to get help in school, becoming depressed, and having many problems in my marriage.

I'm 22, not yet a parent... but I would have to say that if I could only teach my child one thing, it's that no matter how far they go in life... no matter how bad things get... that if you seek after God, He will always bring you through. There's always hope because there's always God.

To always make progress by not striving for perfection... To be the best person she/he can be at all times. I have had many problems in my life because I didn't feel I measured up to my perfect standards and those of my mother. Now that I'm going very slowly and accomplishing many small things, I am feeling better about myself and the world around me.

Great question. A star.
