As a person that believes in evolution, I believe the strongest drive we have is for survival, seconded by the desire to reproduce. Both involve, often brutal, violent and self centerd acts. Christianity however appeals to the higher intellect, the ability to be insightful, sensitive to others, caring and compassionate. The difficulty in taking up Christs teaching is that your instinct will always go back to the violent, aggressive, unthinking animal. Jesus and God asked us to get above that., to deny our base, animal instincts. Tall, tall order for most.

Yes the purpose of life is the procreation of the species the same as any other animal or plant etc.
On the religious side, i feel that peolpe need something to believe in and find it hard to take in the fact that we live, then die, this is just the wy we evolved.
Although i am an athiest i think that if people want to believe in a higher being etc that is there perogative an if it helps them through life then fair enough do agree with what yopu have said..

Christianity has nothing to do with god but everything to do with ruling the people, ( go back a few hundred years)the church wanted to rule the people as they were the lets say the politicians of that time.medicine was being invented new things were happening all around but the people still went to the wise women and the elders in the village. So something had to be done. Christianity was born every pagan festival was changed candle mass became Christmas, Ostar became Easter, Samian became Halloween . people still went to the wise women and the elders for medicine and midwifes etc, so the church brought in the witch finders to get rid of these people stating that they were in lead with the devil. those making everyone else turn to the church and that it your Christianity. Nothing to do with God life is what you make it we all have the freedom to do the right thing. We have just forgotten to be nice and take time out to look around and see what we have instead we are all self centred, and this in its self leads to violent etc.

It's true... the human nature will react to the need for survival and reproduction. Very true!
But you must know that the fruits of the seeds of the teachings of Christ IS survival and reproduction. Yes... look closely at history, look closely at the ways of the world in which survival and life has carried on. Read the philosophical, scientific, and psychological and observe the social methods and conditions that have the most sustenance. All have are the ones that are parallel to the teaching of Christ. I didn't say, the teachings of the church exclusively... I said the teachings of Christ.
Consider this example very carefully: In the story of the Prodigal Son... (Luke-Chap15.Verse17) The son returns to the father NoT because he is truly sorry, (he never does repent) but only because he IS HUNGRY...!
-Not in one moment is Christianity about goodness of its people, because nobody is. Not in one moment is following Christ about: not thinking about our survival. To truly follow Christ, and I mean, to TRULY follow Christ: is to acknowledge and be in peace with the reality that there is NO OTHER way to SURVIVE.

No, I don't agree. While we may have the basic desires to survive and to reproduce (although, clearly, not everyone does - hence suicides and celibacy respectively), they are not overwhelming urges that are to be constantly struggled against.
Neither do you need Christianity to be caring and compassionate. Most human beings have a degree of compassion, whether they are with or without religion.
If you would be a violent self-centred animal without christianity, I pity you.

Evolution also drives us to be insightful, sensitive to others, caring and compassionate. Societies made up of people like this (at least towards people within that society) are more successful.
Seeing as our intellect drives our ability to make tools and control our environment rather than it control us, evolution drives our higher intellect too.
Christianity is just there to hitch a free ride on the back of what mankind was doing anyway.

Evolution selects for altruism and seemingly selfless acts as much as if not more so than brutal, violent and self-centred ones.
There's much interesting stuff to read about this.

i wouldn't go so far to say that christianity appeals to the higher intellect...more so the opposite...as intellect is heightened people often move away from christianity as they no longer need that crutch...they are able to assertain other aspects of life and deal with issues in other ways which are more productive, hands on, at least more than just running away and praying...additionally, when i am "reproducing" or in that aspect, it is not violent...passionate...loving...but not violent...if this is not your experience than i am truly sorry for you

Yes you are right it is hard, and that's why people talk about christianity as a journey rather than an end point. Its not about perfection it's about doing the best we can in the circumstances we are in.
