First sign you will see if the dog scratching and biting. To actually see if your dog has fleas or other signs of them, back brush the hair (usually around the back, rear and base of the tail). If you see "Salt and Pepper" like stuff on his skin and coat that is another sign of fleas. The salt are eggs, the pepper is flea excrement (poop). Fleas, themselves, are very hard to see, they run from light and they are very quick. If your dog is infested they will be all over the dog.
Capstar is a pill you can get from the vet that will kill almost 99% of the fleas in 24 hrs BUT you should then use a good topical like Frontline, Advantage or my fav BioSpot (does fleas, eggs larvae, ticks, and mosquitos and its less expensive than the other two). You MUST also treat your yard and house at the same time. It may take 4 wks to kill all of the fleas in the house and yard. Don't over treat your dog! Even if you see fleas after the Capstar and the spot on-the fleas are dying, you are just seeing a new batch. Use one application of the spot on and don't double up or add any other type of product. You can make your dog extremely ill or kill it. I had a client that didn't read the directions and OD'ed their dog-it died from 2 flea chemicals that were not compatable. I had another that gave there dog a serious chemical burn by over applying the spot on.

Some dogs will scratch a lot. If you look through their fur you can see little black fleas and the leave a black dirt looking stuff on the dogs skin...I don't know if it is flea eggs or poop. Also my dog starts to lose her fur in spots when she has fleas I think it is from her scratching a certain area too many times.
If you think your dog has fleas just go to your vet and get frontline or advantage ( I prefer frontline ) flea drops, it is just a little tube with liquid flea drops inside, you squeeze the liquid onto the back of the dogs neck. When my dog gets fleas I use that stuff and within a day or two she will stop scratching. At my vet's office it runs about $12 per tube.

Lots of scratching mainly. You might also be able to actually see the fleas on him.
The test for fleas is to run a flea comb over your dog, especially the belly, armpits and groin. Look at the hair on the comb - if your dog has fleas you will see the flea dirt (poo) on the hair on the comb. It looks like black dots that are kind of spiral shaped. You might also be able to see these just be sorting through the dog's hair.
If you brush the dog over some wet white paper, the flea dirts will fall on to the paper and stain it red, as they are actually undigested blood.
Any dog and cat needs regular flea treatment, as fleas are much easier to prevent than to get rid of.

scratching, digging at themselves, chewing on themselves, whining, chasing themselves in circles. You can see fleas, if you part hair close to skin they will run, if your dog likes belly rubbins that's an easy place to spot them. ALso, flea dirt (aka poop) looks like black little pieces of dirt throughout fur. Don't wait until the dog has fleas, use a topical flea treatment such as frontline plus, it kills and repels fleas, and kill the eggs to help prevent infestations.

lots of scrathcing and check your dogs fur (around the tail is a favourite place for fleas) if you see little black bugs then your dog has got fleas.
If your dog has fleas buy some flea shampoo and wash your dog well.
hope your dog hasn't got fleas.
