I drove home last night behind a Ford Focus who was then behind a Renault van who was behind an Astra. Of the three - all diesels - the Ford pumped out black smoke every time it accelerated whilst the other two didnt. Being on a motorbike at the time, the stench was quite overpowering and as there were no overtaking opportunities I tried to stay well out his smoke and it was so good to have him turn off in the village. I know they do tests for diesel smoke but I have the impression that Fords are particularly bad in this respect.

Edit : thanks so far. I can see it would smoke if driver was stamping hard but he was so close to the van in front and the car in front of that, and they were all accelerating at the same rate but only the Ford pumped out the smoke. Could be the fuel quality though. Cheapest diesel not likely to be the best

Look again Bill - it was a nearly new ford Focus - registration within last few months and it was definitely a diesel.

If it pumped out black smoke, then the driver was stomping on the accelerator, which created the black smoke.

All 2006 and later Ford vehicles with HDPE fuel tanks (all trucks and most cars) are Partial Zero Emission Vehicles and exhaust is supposed to be limited. It could also have depended on the type of fuel he used. There shouldn't be any strong odour to the exhaust unless the driver put in HSDF (High sulphur (off road) diesel fuel)

It depends a lot on the driver. Any turbodiesel will smoke if you tramp on it. Unless, of course, the Focus was in dire need of attention. Actually the newer Ford diesel is quite a good engine.

Well since the Ford you mentioned isn't a diesel I don't see what your complaining about. If the Focus was smoking it was due to worn engine parts, i.e. worn rings, pistons, etc. Which I find hard to believe in a newer car since the Ford Focus has only been out for a few years.

Ford has never offered a diesel engine in the Focus so I don't know where you came up with that.

In my experience Ford ANYTHING tend to smoke more than any other make with the exception perhaps of Vauxhalls.
