This is surely simply a chronic nervous stress habit.You have not told us what circumstances in your life are applying the pressure.As a wild side bet I wonder if you are suffering from some sort of vitamin deficiency?
Psychotherapy to talk out your problems with or without anti anxiety tablets,hypnosis, a confidante or counsellor but in the absence of severe stress it is difficult to say where this behaviour is coming from.If it is just an unconscious habit you are going to have to find something to do with your hands;send all your money to me c/o yahoo for my new 'Wandering Hands' invention;this is a piece of decorated super elasticy stuff which you wrap round your hands and round the back of your neck and behind your knees,specifically to help my friends who seem unaware that they are constantly pawing me.
Seriously being aware of what your hands are doing is very important,particularly in public - I have a very bad habit when I am stressed of picking my nose and,well,imagine the rest;it's not very nice.
I am a little stumped by your question except to note that it sounds exactly like stress induced self harm in animals;as for the unconscious habit thing I have not looked into this in depth but there must be techniques in the literature to break the cycle of 'I can remember not to do it so long as I am consciously thinking about it'.As a general point these habits can lead to murder and marriage breakdown;I have had to let my mate go because I could no longer tolerate his grinding his teeth.I wonder if there are psychiatric professionals other than hypnotists who specialise in the psychology of addiction/habit.
Very intriguing question this and I think I may crack the books further on this;I am sure that .is it Skinner and the behaviourists who did the work on this?

Seriously sounds like OCD. You need to go to a psychiatrist and get on some medication. Also, this is a behavior and you need to find some self control strategies. Like diverting your attention. Try using a rubber band on your wrist and snapping it every time you feel the urge to pull your hair. However, I think intense therapy and medication is the best for you.

My ex-husband did that studying for exams,plucked a perfect circle on the back of his head. Obviously you're stressed about something.If you can't figure it out by yourself seek professional help.

This is serious. You can't, "just stop". This sounds like OCD. You need professional help. There are doctors that can help you with combination pharmaceutical & therapy. Ask your MD to recommend a good psychiatrist. YOU CAN BE CURED but you need professional help to do it!

simply dont do it.
when you have urg to do it, wait and think whether you really have to do it.
then take two deep breaths
then thank god that he has given you nice bunch of hair, and promise him that you will take care of it.
also put some anti dandrop shampoo and get a good shower. at least 30 min.

just stop!! you seem more conscious of what youare doing now- so i believ this is the right path to quitting. It sounds very self destructive though- see a doctor.
