PARTLY, IN THE 1st WORLD...
“Many of us saw religion as harmless nonsense. Beliefs might lack all supporting evidence but, we thought, if people needed a crutch for consolation, where's the harm? September 11th changed all that.” – Richard Dawkins
ALSO From Y!A’s New Dog Owner:
It was all well and good when you kept your superstitions to yourself, but when you began your campaign to tamper with science education, interfere with medical advances and tried to turn the U.S. into a nation of religious xenophobes it became clear that we needed to respond and not let your shallow and self serving interpretation of the bible run rough shod over the rest of the country.
MANY OTHER Reasons Also Exist.

Beside the favour of any religion.
May be I am wrong but I look at this in this way.
Religion can never be vanish, it can change the understanding but basic rules will always be same.
Look at our Planet.
In Africa still there are some isolated villages, no one went there before and they don't know about out side world, but they are also performing some sort of follower ship that much they understand.
Also where ever you go in the world it will hard to find any nation those are not praying or following power there myth my be different but end is same they are following The Power.
We all humans need it, this give us passion & peace of mind, keep us relax, this is a best shortcut to get rid of our mistakes or sin, it is hard to live happy in the life with the sin and doing good for Reward that gives us courage to live for another day.
If there will be no one to give us reward or punish why we do good things, it will all be messed up.

Religion is a meme that mankind can't let go of. Was always a hot topic.
The 911 angle is pretty simplified. The dark side of religion has a long, inglorious history. The Twin Towers, though spectacular to witness, is not an eye-opener in this regard unless you've never noticed previous horrors committed in God's name.
As long as man believes in absurdities, he will continue to commit atrocities.

Maybe in America - in the UK we have been living with the 'dark side' of religion for a while now. In fact a lot of the reason our nightmare carried on for so long was because the Americans were funding it! I believe you called it the war back home - we called it terrorism in Northern Ireland. Must say hats off to Bill Clinton though cause he sorted it out without involving religion BECAUSE THAT IS NOT WHAT IT IS EVER REALLY ABOUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why has abortion been a hot topic in America for generation - Religion, Religion has fueled American debate for a very long time now - don't try to use a horrendous disaster and undermine the very complicated reason it was perpetrated in this crass manner. A lot of people died and have died over the last couple of decades in the name of Religion but not because of it.

Well, I know 9/11 is what made my wife give up on trying to believe in God. (She never really believed; she just felt like it would be good to try, including going to church.) But of course, that's not what all religion is about. I think what's really getting peoples' attention is fundamentalism, which is religion gone crazy and drunk with power.

Never than before the age of global communications and mass media has it been more obvious how murderous and self-defeating fundamentalist religions and sects are.

have you seen the pictures of people jumping from that burning buildings.... almost 200 people jumped from those buildings while fairy virgin angels watching them fall.
its not only the twin towers... 99% of world terrrisom is related to religious issues.. and the greedy politicians use the dumb faith to win over political achievments. They used to live in that environment.

Nope. You classically overgeneralize.
Do you SERIOUSLY believe that you can just lump every religions' beliefs into one single ideal? Do you seriously think people will take you seriously for it?
And also, do you really want an honest, good answer or just something that fits what you believe?
