I am trying to quit smoking. Do the nicotine patches really work?

They worked for me! I was ready and totally sick of it.. and I came up with a list of reasons why I wanted to quit- like didn't want to die and didn't want my parents to be hurt or crying if they had to bury me. I felt I was being selfish and my death would hurt a lot of people and it was such a stupid and irresponsible thing to be doing to myself. I was 30 when I quit. So I had no more excuses- like Oh I will quit later.. Later had come. So you need to be mentally ready and do it becasue you REALLY want to and not for anyone else. I tried going cold turkey and it didn't work.I needed help and asked for the patch. (I tried pills, and the fake nico cig.. nothing worked) I tried the patch and the first batch of patches made me feel sick in my stomach in the beginning- but I didn't wantt o smoke. I can admit to falling and smoking one half of one.. and feeling crappy and stopped. I got irritated sometimes- but just remind yourself you aren't going to do it. And you are giving your life back to yourself. BUT YOU MUST complete the program. You might think on your 2nd session that you don't need to buy the last batch. Yes you do! My friends husband thought that and went back to smoking.. Then he tried again and has been smokfree for as long as I can remember. I have completed the program and have been smokefree for 2 years now. You will get a craving once in a while but it is totally random and if you occupy your mind at that time and just think of something else you will forget about it.. the cravings will diminish and become less and less frequent. I never think about it anymore and when I pass by smokers, most of the time, I am repuled by the smell. But sometimes I enjoy a good wiff of it and continue walking- content with that alone. If I can do it so can you!You can do it!! I hope you do! Get your list going as to why you hate smoking! Oh my other reason for hating it was that I hated it owning me and dragging me out of places to do it.. or smelling like it.. It ownedme. I hated buying them too! So much money up in smoke! Just a few reasons to get you started!:) Cheers!
Oh and I like to drink- but trust me just say no and pat yourself on the back for saying no and breaking the habit of drinking and smoking. You will not need or crave it after a while. Just trust me on that. Email me if you need someone to talk to.

Nicotine pathes, like any of the Quit Smoking crutches out there, only work if you're ready to quit.

You have to avoid your normal routine and do things differently for a while... don't have a cig with coffee in the morning, no smoking in the car, etc... That makes it a bit easier, but you still have to work at it.

Good Luck!

The nicotine patch can cause your heart to beat faster. Either call your doctor or go see him and find out alternative treatments. There are several prescription medications that help with quitting. I quit 6 months ago and it is hard but do try to knock the habit if you can.
