I would leave the laptop behind (you can find free internet at libraries or cheap internet cafes in any city in North America) and pass on the hitch hiking. Instead, pack a small bag and buy a Greyhound (or other) cross-country bus pass.

I'm seriously all for doing things like this! I've done something similar - quit my very well-paying job to move to Eastern Europe. I did a million things that my friends have never done and would never do (though most of them were totally jealous that I was able to do it). Go for it. You will only ever regret the things you don't do and you can easily find work again once you get back.

I always say I don't want any regrets when I'm 80 and can't do these things anymore, or even when I'm 40 and have a mortgage, spouse and kids. Now is the time to do it!
