My pet Yorkie is 5 pounds.
But my friend was telling me that the cutest dogs were only 1-2 pounds.
But wouldn't a 1 pound full-size dog be unhealthy?
My yorkie is really 4 pounds and 8 ounces, but it rounds out to 5 pounds.
Do you think 5 pounds is too big?

To big for a small run breed Yorkie?

Dogs that weigh 1-2lbs should NEVER be bred/produced. No reputable breeder will ever breed dogs that small. In comparison, I have a pet cat that weighs 20lbs! 1-2lbs for a pet dog is ludicrous.
The best way to tell if your dog is over or underweight is the rib test. If you can feel the ribs easily through a light layer of fat, you can see a visible waistline and your dog has good muscle tone, chances are that he is at a good weight. If you can't feel the ribs and his muscle tone is somewhat lacking, chances are he is overweight.

Yes I think dogs that only weigh 1-2lbs are unhealthy. These are the 'teacup' variety dogs that have been bred to be ridiculously small, which is a very irresponsible thing to have done.
Your dog is not a 'teacup' dog, be glad of it. At 5lbs, she is a toy Yorkie and is quite small enough. Obviously if she only weighed 1-2lbs she would be far, far too skinny. There is no possible way a dog who weighs 5lb can be overweight unless they're a 'teacup' dog!
Don't be trying to make your dog weigh less. For one thing, ideal weight for a dog is supposed to be judged on shape of the dog. Since there is so much variety in size even among breeds, it can't be judged on weight alone. So long as your dog has a proper waistline and you can feel her ribs easily, but not see them, then she is fine.
That's just your friend's opinion that 'the cutest dogs only weigh 1-2lbs'. Personally I don't find these teacup dogs cute at all, I feel sorry for them.

5 lbs is about right for a yorkie unless they are especially small framed. the best way to tell is to ask a vet because they can judge the frame of the specific dog and the amount of extra fat it has.
but really i dont see a yorkie being too much smaller in general.
ive seen really tiny ones but you know when they are sposed to be that small.
like people- not all yorkies are the same.

It sounds like your dog is a healthy weight. All these people are obsessed with small 1 lb dogs. What they don't realize is a lot of those dogs are runts , then people breed them to get that small size. That basically leads to very unhealthy , abnormally small dogs. So, the 1-2 lbs dogs may be the "cutest", but they probably aren't as healthy as yours. I wouldn't worry about anything. It sounds like your dog is perfectly fine.

wow your friend is pretty shallow to want her dog to be 1lb 2lbs, OR EVEN 3 lbs!
She is the kind of girl that wants an accessory... not a real dog.
She will probably carry it everywhere and pretend she is fu*cking paris hilton or something.
Ugh.. personally I hate little bitty dogs.
They are SO overated.
So eff with Hilary and Lola,
and eff with Paris and Tinkerbell,
and deffinetly eff with your "friend" who wants to be a wanna-be popular girl

depends, there are mini yorkies that are tiney and there are regular yorkies that are around 5 lbs. you or your vet should be able to look at your dog and tell by ribs or exta fat if he is the right size
